Upgrading a Copilot-related subscription depends on whether it is for home (Personal/Family/Premium/Copilot Pro) or business (Copilot Business / Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on). Use the path that matches the current subscription.
For home subscriptions (Personal, Family, Premium, Copilot Pro)
To move to a Microsoft 365 subscription with more features (for example, from a lower plan or just Copilot Pro to a richer Microsoft 365 plan):
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account that owns the current subscription at the Microsoft account services page (account.microsoft.com/services).
- Purchase the Microsoft 365 subscription to upgrade to (for example, Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, or Premium) using that same account.
- The remaining days on the current subscription automatically convert and are added to the new subscription. The exact number of days added depends on what plan is being upgraded from and to.
If the goal is to move from a Copilot-only offering (such as Copilot Pro) to a full Microsoft 365 plan with Copilot features, this is treated as “switching to a Microsoft 365 subscription with more features” by buying the new plan and starting to use it immediately.
For business subscriptions (Copilot Business / Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on)
If using Copilot in a business/organization context:
- To add Copilot Business:
- Purchase Copilot Business via the Microsoft 365 admin center, through a Customer Solution Partner (CSP), or directly from Microsoft using the public Copilot Business plans and pricing page.
- If Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on licenses are already in place and the goal is to move to Copilot Business:
- Existing Microsoft 365 Copilot add-on licenses cannot be switched mid-term. The current annual commitment must be fulfilled first.
- Additional Copilot Business licenses can be purchased at any time, but existing Copilot add-on licenses will not automatically convert at renewal; a separate purchase and plan change are required once the commitment ends.
In all cases, ensure the underlying Microsoft 365 plan meets the licensing prerequisites for the Copilot option being upgraded to.
