Which version of macOS do you have? Note that if you have the most recent operating system (Tahoe), you won't be able to run Office 2016 or Office 2019. Both of these versions are completely out of support.

Office 2016 for Mac is no longer supported, so the download link is not always easy to find from the normal Office pages. The key also needs to be linked to the Microsoft account that was originally used to redeem it. Office 2016 support has ended, but redeemed products can still usually be reinstalled from the associated account.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

First, go to Microsoft Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account used when the key was first redeemed. If Office 2016 for Mac is listed there, choose Install. If the key has never been redeemed, go to Office setup, sign in, and enter the 25-character key. Once a key has already been redeemed, you should reinstall from the Microsoft account rather than entering the key again.

If you specifically need the Office 2016 for Mac 16.16 installer, Microsoft’s own support article provides these older installer links: Office 2016 for Mac Home & Business or Volume License, and Office 2016 for Mac Home & Student. Make sure you pick the correct one, because Home & Student does not include Outlook.

It is recommended that you avoid random third-party download sites, especially if they ask for another key or activation tool. If the product does not appear under Services & subscriptions, contact Microsoft Support with the purchase proof and key.

Hello Kai-H,

From your answer above, it seems that even though not supported for feature or security updates, a Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac key could still be redeemed and added to a Microsoft account, the installer downloaded, and then the software activated ... is that a correct understanding?

I recognize the issues and limitations with using old software such as this, but I have an older Mac that I use mostly offline to run other legacy software in 32-bit mode, so I am limited to macOS Mojave 10.14.6 as the latest version that can run those. Since Microsoft deactivated all Office 2019 for Mac installations on July 13, 2026, my only fallback option to run Office offline is to consider falling back to version 2016. I'm not interested in 3rd party office software nor an online subscription (I don't plan to use that computer online). These are the reasons for my specific interest and query about the status of Office 2016 for Mac.

Thank you in advance for clarification regarding the possibility to still install and activate Office 2016.

Microsoft still provides Office 2016 for Mac 16.16 installers, but its current documentation does not confirm that an unused Office 2016 key can still be newly redeemed and activated in 2026. Therefore, I would not recommend buying a key on that assumption.

Office 2016 for Mac ended support on October 13, 2020, and version 16.16 was its final release. Existing Office 2016 installations continue to function, but that article predates the July 13, 2026 licensing-certificate change.

For the current certificate issue, Microsoft requires macOS 12 or later and Office version 16.83 or later. Mojave 10.14.6 cannot meet that requirement, while Office 2016 cannot be updated beyond 16.16.

You could try redeeming a key you already own through Microsoft Office setup and then use the official 16.16 installer, but activation is not guaranteed. Redemption and initial activation also require an internet connection. After activation, offline use may be possible, but Microsoft has not published current guidance guaranteeing that Office 2016 will remain activated on Mojave.

Thank you for your reply. I have information received after my last comment / question that Microsoft was (as of this past week) still allowing new keys for Office 2016 for Mac to be added to accounts and was still providing new activations for it.

As for remaining activated, I have my original installation of Office 2016 on an older Mac laptop that is running OSX 10.12.6 (Sierra), and Office 2016 is still activated on it, working OK both online and offline. My understanding is that Office 2016 relies on a local activation file that is not affected by the certificate expiration issue that has plagued the 2019 version.

Things have changed since this thread started in early July. As Kai-H said, macOS Monterey or later is now required to run Office on a Mac. You may be able to install certain older releases but only with a more recent license. See John Korchok's article at https://www.brandwares.com/bestpractices/2023/03/most-recent-office-you-can-run-best-practices/ .

UPDATE: Today, I was successfully able to redeem and add a new Office 2016 for Mac license key to my MS account. I used the link that Kai-H provided to download the installer for the 16.16.27 version of Office 2016 H&B. It installed and activated online successfully using my newly added license key.

So, as of August 5, 2026, it is still possible to install this version to an older Mac and have it remain activated even while online. In my case, I have an older Mac Pro running OSX 10.14.6 so that the many and expensive legacy 32-bit Mac applications that I had accumulated over the years are still possible to run.

Since this legacy computer is used for accessing personally created Office files saved locally rather than for active file sharing across a network or online, having "no security update support" for Office 2016 is not a particular concern for me.

Again, I was forced down this path to step back to install Office 2016 for Mac, because Microsoft deactivated my previously installed Office 2019 "permanent" license with their July 13, 2026 certificate non-renewal decision.
