Excel I-bar cursor white in Formula Bar

Whenever I open Excel and I move my cursor into the Formula Bar, it changes from the pointer arrow, briefly to arrows, and then to a white I-bar cursor. Changing to an I-bar cursor is totally normal, but since it's white, it disappears into the formula bar and I have an extremely difficult time figuring out where my cursor is because of the white background. Is there any way to set or change the color of the I-bar cursor?

I just realized it is also happening in Outlook when I create a new message. The I-bar cursor is white and very hard to locate once it's over a field of white (which is everything).

It is not happening in Word. I get a black I-bar there.

Hi S Landon,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience regarding the I-beam cursor behavior in Excel and Outlook.

As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly access your account or review the backend systems to diagnose and resolve this issue for you. However, our role here is limited to providing general guidance by offering clear next steps, sharing applicable resources, and directing you to the appropriate support channels so you can work with the right team to investigate further.

Since this does not happen in Word, where the I-beam cursor appears black, this may be related to how Excel and Outlook are rendering the cursor, or it may be affected by Windows pointer/accessibility settings, Office theme settings, display settings, graphics rendering, or add-ins.

At this time, Excel and Outlook do not provide a specific in-app setting to directly change the I-beam cursor color. However, the following steps may help improve visibility or identify the cause:

1/ Check Windows Mouse pointer settings

Please try adjusting the mouse pointer style in Windows:

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Mouse pointer and touch.
  • Try changing the mouse pointer style to Black, Inverted, or a custom color.
  • Reopen Excel and Outlook to check if the I-beam cursor visibility improves.

2/ Enable Text Cursor Indicator

  • Open Settings > Accessibility > Text cursor.
  • Turn on Text cursor indicator.
  • Adjust the indicator size and color if needed.

This may help highlight the text cursor position when working in text fields.

3/ Test Excel and Outlook in Safe Mode

This can help determine whether an add-in is affecting the cursor display.

For Excel:

  • Press Windows + R.
  • Type:  excel /safe
  • Press Enter.  For Outlook:
  • Press Windows + R.
  • Type:  outlook /safe
  • Press Enter.

If the cursor appears correctly in Safe Mode, the issue may be related to an add-in or customization.

4/ Update Office and Windows

Please make sure both Microsoft Office and Windows are fully updated.

To update Office:

  • Open Excel or Outlook.
  • Go to File > Account.
  • Select Update Options.
  • Click Update Now.

To update Windows: go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.

5/ Repair Microsoft Office

If the issue continues, you may try repairing Office:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  • Locate Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
  • Select Modify.
  • Run Quick Repair first.
  • If the issue remains, try Online Repair.

Online Repair may take longer and may require an internet connection.

If the issue persists after trying the steps above, please let me know the following information so we can further investigate:

  • Office version and update channel
  • Whether you are using a Microsoft 365 Personal/Family license or a Microsoft 365 Business/Enterprise license
  • Whether the issue occurs when Excel and Outlook are opened in Safe Mode

Please understand that our initial reply may not always immediately resolve the issue. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

I hope this information is helpful. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to share them in the comment below. I'm very happy to help.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
