OneNote "send pages" opens old outlook

Hi

I have switched to the new outlook, but whenever I send a page from OneNote, it opens the old outlook and it regularly doesn't send out the page correctly. How can I make sure it always opens the new outlook?

This happens because the "Email Page" feature in the classic desktop version of OneNote relies on deeply integrated MAPI hooks, which default to Classic Outlook. Since New Outlook handles system protocols differently, you need to adjust your default app and protocol handlers in Windows to route these actions correctly.

Try these steps to fix the routing:

• Set New Outlook as the Default Mail Handler: Open Windows Settings (Win + I) > Apps > Default apps. Scroll down or search for Outlook (New). Click it and ensure it is set as the default application for the MAILTO protocol and all default mail extensions.

• Enable the New Outlook Toggle: Open Classic (old) Outlook. Look at the top right corner for a toggle that says "Try the new Outlook". If it is turned off, switch it to On. This updates the internal Windows registry registry paths to intercept MAPI requests from other Office apps like OneNote.

• Use the Share Built-In Feature: If the classic "Email Page" button continues to look for the old software layout, try using the native Windows integration shortcut instead. Click the Share button at the top right corner of OneNote and select Email Page or choose Outlook directly from the modern Windows share flyout panel.

If you are going to use an answer from an AI, you might want to test it first. None of your suggestions actually work.

OneNote Send does not use the MAILTO protocol, so setting the default to New Outlook will not help.

Toggling the "Try the New Outlook" switch in Outlook does not change any settings that will redirect a OneNote Send to New Outlook.

Using the Share button on the OneNote page will not use New Outlook.

Currently, the new Outlook for Windows does not support the OneNote “Email Page” experience, and Microsoft has not published a confirmed timeline for when it will be introduced. This happens because the OneNote Email Page feature is available in Classic Outlook, while the equivalent capability remains under investigation for the new Outlook experience

Unfortunately since then I have issues that the mail doesn't always send out unless I leave the old outlook open until I receive it.

Correct. OneNote just creates the email. The rest is up to Outlook.

They kind of warn you in the (confusing and incorrect) dialog that pops up when you first do a OneNote Send Page:

Make sure Outlook (classic) is running

Not always true. But it's flaky. Sometimes the OneNote Send will auto open Outlook, sometimes not.

set the new version of Outlook as your default app

Just plain wrong. I don't know why that line is there. Wishful thinking? Was planned and never implemented?
