Regarding the recently announced retirement of Office Online Server (OOS), effective December 31, 2026.

For many customers in compliant industries, there currently doesn't appear to be a like-for-like on-premises replacement for the browser-based editing experience OOS provides, and this is becoming a genuine blocker in our conversations with them.

Given this, I wanted to check with you directly:

Can we confirm that SharePoint OOS is indeed retiring, effective December 31 2026?
Is there any roadmap item, private preview, or interim solution Microsoft can point to for on-premises customers who need browser-based Office editing beyond December 2026?
Are there any hybrid options (e.g., partial integration with Microsoft 365 while keeping content on-prem) that Microsoft is recommending for SharePoint Server SE customers specifically?

According to Announcing the retirement for Office Online Server | Microsoft Community Hub, Microsoft announced that Office Online Server will reach end of support on December 31, 2026. After that date, OOS will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft. This retirement applies to OOS itself and not to products that integrate with it, such as SharePoint Server Subscription Edition, Exchange Server Subscription Edition, or Skype for Business Server Subscription Edition.

Based on the publicly available Microsoft documentation and announcements I was able to find, I am not aware of any announced roadmap item, private preview, public preview, or successor product that provides a direct on-premises replacement for OOS browser-based Word, Excel, and PowerPoint editing. The public retirement announcement primarily directs customers to evaluate supported alternatives such as Microsoft 365 and Office for the web.

Additionally, Microsoft's published guidance notes that Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise and Office LTSC 2024 remain supported desktop clients for working with documents hosted in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition and Exchange Server Subscription Edition environments. However, this guidance refers to desktop-client-based access rather than a replacement for OOS browser-based editing.

Microsoft continues to invest in SharePoint Server Subscription Edition hybrid capabilities, including integration with Microsoft 365 services and hybrid search scenarios. However, I could not find public documentation describing a supported architecture where Microsoft 365 Office for the web provides browser-based editing for content that remains exclusively hosted in an on-premises SharePoint Server farm as a replacement for OOS. Public guidance instead points customers requiring browser-based Office editing experiences toward Microsoft 365 services.

If your organization requires clarification on future product direction, roadmap commitments, or supported architectures beyond what has been publicly announced, I would recommend contacting your organization's sales representative as those questions are generally outside the scope of what can be confirmed in a community forum.
