SharePoint Site Performance Issues - Slow Loading and Lag When Accessing Large Documents and Images.

Hello,

We are experiencing performance issues with a SharePoint Site that has become noticeably slow to load and navigate. Large Word documents containing numerous images and graphs appear to load slowly. General site responsiveness is degraded.

Here are some of the steps I have already taken:

  • Verified that Microsoft Word is not exhibiting excessive resources usage (CPU and memory utilization appears normal).
  • Confirmed that Track Changes is disabled in the affected Word document.
  • The affected document is 104 pages and contains multiple Images and graphs.
  • The issue appears to be related to document or SharePoint performance rather than local workstation resource constraints.

Information Requested:

  • Are there any known SharePoint performance issues related to large office documents or pages containing numerous high-resolution images.
  • Are there any Microsoft diagnostic tools, logs, or health checks we should review to identify the root cause?
  • Please advise if there are any tenant-specific settings or service issues that may be contributing to this behavior

    Hi Yosef,

A 104-page Word document containing numerous images and graphs can experience slower loading and rendering times, particularly when opened through browser-based experiences. Additionally, SharePoint page performance can be affected by large images, structural navigation, and a high number of API calls associated with page rendering. However, this may not be the only culprit.

For diagnostics, please navigate to Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Help & Support.

    User's image

Once there, turn off the Support Assistant toggle located at the top of the page. Then enter a description of your issue in the search box.

If the issue is related to SharePoint Online, the relevant built-in diagnostic tools should appear among the suggested results. These diagnostics can help identify potential configuration, performance, or service-related issues affecting your site.

For example, you can follow the prompts shown in the image below:

For more information and in-dept diagnostic steps, please consult: Use the Page Diagnostics tool for SharePoint in Microsoft 365 - Microsoft 365 Enterprise | Microsof…

At the moment, there are no reported service-level incidents indicating a widespread SharePoint loading issue. To monitor any active advisories or incidents that may affect SharePoint Online, please navigate to Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Health > Service Health and review the current service status and updates.

Once you collect the logs to identify this issue, you can use your admin credentials to submit a support request through the Microsoft 365 Admin Center and provide them with the result of your diagnostic process.

This route ensures that a Microsoft support engineer can initiate a remote session to investigate backend configurations, run advanced diagnostic tools, and, if necessary, escalate the case to specialized teams with access to internal systems and logs. These backend resources are essential for resolving issues that go beyond what’s visible in the user interface.

As community moderators, we’re here to guide you, but due to privacy and security limitations, we don’t have access to the backend tools required for a full resolution. For this reason, contacting Microsoft Support via the Admin Center is the most secure and efficient way forward.

I hope this helps you resolve the issue quickly. I’m glad to assist and truly hope the information provided has been useful. Please feel free to reach out anytime if you need further assistance.

    Hello,

This information is very good to know but it does not help me. I do have a question what if staff compressed their images before entering them into SharePoint, would that help with lag and other issues?
