I've exausted all methods of trying to get my windows defender app to launch after updating to windows 11 from windows 10. I've tried terminating, repairing and reseting it through the app settings, i've tried Deleting the Register of the Windows Defender, I've tried reinstalling it via powershell, I've done a full windows in place repair and kept my files, i've tried reinstalling windows 11 and kept my files, i've used malwarebytes to scan for rootkits and nothing.

Hi. I'm David, and I'm happy to help you.

To be able to assist you better, please clarify the following:

    • Do you have, or have you previously had, a third-party antivirus installed? If so, which one? (You don't need to consider Malwarebytes; if you used it only for scanning, it wouldn't interfere with the system in this way.)
    • When you performed the in-place repair, did you use an ISO or a USB drive with the latest version downloaded directly from the Microsoft website, or did you use media you already had on hand?

What is the current version and "OS Build" of your Windows 11?

    • Press "Windows + R", type winver, and click OK.

If you prefer, share a screenshot. Use the shortcut "Windows + Shift + S" to use the screenshot tool.

Be sure to censor your email address if it appears. The Microsoft Q&A is public.

    Looking forward to your reply.

I need to gather some information in order to see where the problem is.

Open Windows PowerShell and copy/paste/run the following commands, then post a screenshot of the output.

gsv SecurityHealthService, WdBoot, WdFilter, WdNisDrv, WinDefend, wscsvc | ft -auto Name, DisplayName, StartType, Status

gci 'C:\Windows\System32\SecurityHealth'-recurse -file -Include '*.dll', '*.exe', '*.appx' | Get-AuthenticodeSignature | ft -auto Path, Status

Please also provide Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) logs for analysis.

Note: If you are using Edge or Chrome, SmartScreen may initially block the download. Click on the three dots next to the warning and select Keep => Click the Delete drop arrow => Keep anyway.

    • If your computer's language is not English, rename FRST64.exe to FRST64English.exe
    • Run the tool, leave the default settings, and press Scan.
    • Zip the logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, then upload to a cloud storage service like OneDrive, Google Drive or gofile.io
    • Post the share link.
