How do I change my administrator email address

For an admin account, the steps depend on whether this is a Microsoft 365 work/school account or a personal Microsoft account.

If this is a Microsoft 365 admin (work/school) account

An admin can change their own email address from the Microsoft 365 admin center:

1. Go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and sign in with the current admin account.
2. Select Users > Active users.
3. Find and select the admin account.
4. Under Username and email, choose Manage username and email.
5. Update the email address (and domain if needed), then select Save changes.

If the phone number also needs updating:

1. In Users > Active users, select the same admin account.
2. Under Contact information, choose Manage contact information.
3. Update the phone number and select Save changes.

If the hacked account is a different user (not the current admin), another admin with the user administrator role can follow the same steps for that user.

If this is a personal Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, etc.)

For a personal Microsoft account, email addresses and phone numbers are aliases. To change them:

1. Sign in to the Microsoft account at the Your info page: Edit account info.
2. Choose Add email or Add phone number to add a new alias.
3. After adding, select Remove next to the old, hacked, or no-longer-used address or number.

If an additional email is needed only for verification (not sign-in):

1. Sign in to the My Account page: https://myaccount.microsoft.com.
2. Select Security info.
3. Select Add method, choose Email, then add a non-work/non-school email address.
4. Enter the verification code sent to that address.

If the account was hacked and access is lost or security info was changed by the attacker, use the official recovery guidance:

• Follow the steps in How to recover a hacked or compromised Microsoft account.
• If recovery fails and the attacker changed aliases and security info, the account may not be recoverable.
