Windows 10 locks up after 5 minutes after install of 2026-06 cumulative update
Hello,
2026-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-Base Systems and 2026-06 .NET 8.0.28 Security Update for x64 Client were installed on my Windows 10 computer on 6/13/2026.
After that update, the computer did not respond the the keyboard or mouse 5 minutes after Windows initialized. It had to be shut down manually using the Power switch. I tried to restart the computer several times and got the same result.
I found an article online that explained how to temporarily fix the problem by disabling the Secure-Boot-Update task in the Task Scheduler. After I did that, Windows did not lock up after 5 minutes anymore.
However, I'm not sure whether I should leave the Secure-Boot-Update task disabled indefinitely. I enabled it today to see whether there had been a fix pushed by Microsoft, but the computer went back to the original problem, so I disabled the Secure-Boot-Update task again.
Is there something I need to do to allow the Secure-Boot Task to work or should I just leave the task disabled indefinitely?
Thanks.

Hi JC,
I understand why you're hesitant to leave the task disabled permanently. Based on your description, the system becomes stable when the “Secure‑Boot‑Update” task is disabled, but Microsoft's current guidance indicates that this task is responsible for applying Secure Boot certificate updates and should normally remain enabled. If it is disabled, future Secure Boot certificate updates cannot be applied.
Since the freeze returns as soon as the task is enabled, this may indicate that the update process is being blocked by the device's firmware rather than the task itself. Microsoft's Secure Boot troubleshooting guidance recommends checking for firmware-related issues and Secure Boot update errors before leaving the task disabled indefinitely.
Please try the following:
1, Check whether a BIOS/UEFI firmware update is available from your PC manufacturer.
- Visit the manufacturer's support website.
- Search for your exact PC model.
- Install the latest BIOS/UEFI update available.
Secure Boot certificate updates depend on proper firmware support and may fail or repeatedly retry if the firmware cannot process the update correctly.
2, Review Secure Boot-related events.
- Press Windows + X and select “Event Viewer”.
- Go to “Windows Logs” > “System”.
- Look for events from “TPM-WMI” around the time the freeze occurs.
- Note any Event IDs such as 1795, 1803, or 1801, which can indicate why the Secure Boot update is failing.
3, Confirm whether your device is an older model that no longer receives firmware updates.
- Microsoft notes that some older devices may be unable to complete certain Secure Boot certificate updates if required OEM firmware support is unavailable
