Urgent: Sole Global Admin locked out due to Microsoft Authenticator loop – Cannot access business account

Hi everyone,

I am in desperate need of help from a Microsoft Moderator or Support Escalation Engineer. I am completely locked out of my small business Microsoft 365 tenant and my business is currently at a total standstill.

The Issue: I recently moved to a new Mac and am trying to set up my environment. I have my correct email, password, and recovery phone number. However, the login process forces a Microsoft Authenticator push notification loop on my iPhone. The Authenticator app is not receiving any push notifications, nor does it generate the necessary prompts on my device. When I click "I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now", the only available alternative backup option provided by the system is "Use a verification code" from the exact same, non-functioning Authenticator app. Additional details:

I am the sole owner and the ONLY Global Administrator for this tenant. There is no other administrator who can log in and reset my MFA methods via Entra ID.

  1. I am currently away from my old, authenticated computer for the next 4 weeks, so I cannot modify my security info remotely.
  2. I tried contacting phone support, chat via personal account, but all for nothing. the automated voice system repeatedly tells me to go to the website and disconnects, preventing me from reaching a human.

Can a Microsoft Agent/Moderator please open a private secure ticket and escalate my case to the Data Protection Team (Tenant Recovery Team)? I need an emergency MFA reset/re-registration for my admin account so I can regain access to my business.

Please contact me via private message here so I can provide my alternative contact email and phone number. This whole case is ridiculous, I understand safety measures, but for 2 hours I cannot authenticate that me is me! So yes the account is secure - even I cannot use it. On top of that reaching customer support is a nightmare. I can't login for an agent help and I am left without help

Thank you.

    Hi @Jola K

Good day and I’m sorry to hear about the difficulties you’re experiencing.

First, I would like to clarify that this is a user-to-user support forum, and we are not Microsoft Support. The moderators and contributors here do not have access to backend systems, nor do we have the ability to directly intervene in Microsoft product functionality or create support tickets on your tenant’s behalf. Our role is limited to providing technical guidance and sharing best practice recommendations based on the issues, requests, and scenarios described by users.

I understand that you are currently unable to receive verification codes via the Microsoft Authenticator app, which has resulted in being locked out of the only Global Administrator account for your tenant.

In this situation there are only two official paths available to regain access to the tenant:

1.Please visit the following page and reach out to phone number via: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

I understand that you’ve had difficulty bypassing the AI system to reach a live agent. Based on my experience, the following guidance may help improve your chances of getting through.

(When you call the support number, you may hear an introduction of about 30 seconds such as "you can visit the link...". You can ignore this introduction and wait until you are presented with the options. Then press "1" as a business email user, and again "1" for technical help.)

IVR: What kind of problem are you concerned about?

    You: Authenticator.

A: What products do you use?

    You: Office 365 for business.

    Verification: Education or company account?

    You: For companies

    IVR: Are you an administrator?

    You: Yes.

IVR: Are there any other administrators in your organization?

    You: No.

IVR: Do you need a... Service request?

You: Yes. I need to create a ticket. Please send me directly to the Data Protection Team.

2.If Method 1 does not resolve the issue, you may consider registering a new tenant by signing up for a trial subscription using this link. This will allow you to create a new tenant by following the on-screen prompts.

Once the new tenant is set up, you can access the Microsoft 365 admin center and submit a support ticket requesting assistance from the Data Protection team regarding your previous tenant.

Assuming you have successfully created the trial tenant, navigate to the Microsoft 365 admin center and click the Help & support icon to raise a ticket. The support agent will be able to create a case under the affected tenant and subsequently transfer it to the Data Protection team, who can assist you in regaining access.

Please mention that you are raising ticket on behalf of the affected tenant that you do not have access to. The support team will help you to create ticket on the affected tenant then later on the Microsoft Data Protection team will assist you.

Note: This process will take more time than usual (7-14 working days) for your account to get access again as Data Protection is always overwhelmed with the number of tickets. As I am forum moderator, I do not have access to Microsoft internal system to assist or push this process to be quicker.

On the other hand, if you do create the trial and it resolves the issue, please remember to cancel the subscription afterward to avoid any related charges.

I understand that this entire process can feel long and complicated, and I truly appreciate your patience while working through it. These steps are in place to protect the security of your account, so I hope you can understand why they are required. I sincerely hope you’ll be able to regain access to your account soon. If you need help at any point, or if you have any questions during the process, please feel free to reach out, I’m always here and happy to assist.

    Appreciate your patience and understanding.

Note: Please follow the steps in our documentation to enable e-mail notifications if you want to receive the related email notification for this thread.
