Why can't I send and receive gmails in Outlook 365? I can in the Outlook app but not in 365. This seems too restrictive and is frustrating.

Hi Hugh Blaza

I understand that you can use Gmail in the Outlook app, but you cannot send or receive Gmail through 365. When you say “365,” do you mean Outlook on the web in a browser, or the Microsoft 365 Outlook app installed on your Mac? If by “365” you mean Outlook on the web, Outlook.com, or the Microsoft 365 web portal, please note that Microsoft no longer supports adding or syncing new third-party connected accounts, such as Gmail, directly inside Outlook.com. You can see the supported article here: Connected email accounts like Gmail and Yahoo not working in Outlook.com | Microsoft Support. You can still use Gmail through supported options such as Outlook for Mac, Outlook mobile, or Gmail forwarding to another mailbox.

Meanwhile, try the steps below:

1) Use Outlook for Mac for Gmail

Open Outlook for Mac and go to: Outlook > Settings > Accounts > Add Account

Then:

  • Enter your Gmail address.
  • Follow the Google sign-in prompts.
  • Select Allow when asked.
  • Finish adding the account.

See: Add a Gmail account to Outlook for Mac | Microsoft Support

2) Check that Gmail IMAP is enabled

In a browser, go to Gmail, then open: Settings > See all settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP

Under IMAP access:

  • Select Enable IMAP.
  • Select Save Changes.

3) Make sure Gmail folders are available to Outlook

In Gmail, go to: Settings > See all settings > Labels. Make sure Show in IMAP is selected for important folders, such as:

  • Inbox
  • Sent Mail
  • Trash
  • All Mail

4) Refresh sync in Outlook for Mac

After enabling IMAP and checking the Gmail folder settings, return to Outlook for Mac and select Sync on the ribbon. After changing Gmail IMAP or folder settings, syncing may take some time to refresh.

5) Remove and add the Gmail account again if it still does not work

If Gmail still does not send or receive in Outlook for Mac, remove the Gmail account and add it again. Go to: Outlook > Settings > Accounts

Then:

  • Select the Gmail account.
  • Remove the account.
  • Add it again using the Google sign-in prompt.
  • Select Allow when Outlook asks for access.

6) If you are trying to use Gmail from Outlook.com or Outlook on the web

If the issue is specifically with Outlook.com or Outlook on the web, use one of these supported alternatives instead:

  • Use Gmail in Outlook for Mac.
  • Use Gmail in Outlook mobile.
  • Set up Gmail forwarding to another mailbox.

Third-party accounts such as Gmail can no longer be newly connected or synced directly in Outlook.com.
