We are reviewing Microsoft 365 Copilot interaction data in Microsoft Purview eDiscovery.

Scenario:

  1. A user submits a Microsoft 365 Copilot prompt.
  2. The user attaches a file (or references a file from SharePoint/OneDrive) in the prompt.
  3. We add the Copilot interaction to a Review Set.

Observation:

  1. The user prompt is visible in the Review Set; however, only the prompt text is available. We could not find any reference, metadata, relationship, or mapping between the user prompt and the file that was attached during the Copilot interaction.
  2. The Copilot response is visible in the Review Set.
  3. The document/file link appears only in the Copilot response or reference section.
  4. We do not see the attached file displayed as a separate attachment within the user prompt record.
  5. We also could not identify any metadata in the Review Set export that associates the attached file with the original user prompt.
  6. Based on the documentation reviewed, we could not find guidance explaining how user-attached files should be represented in Copilot eDiscovery Review Sets.

Questions:

  1. Is this expected product behavior?
  2. Are user-attached files intentionally stored only as Copilot references and not as prompt-side attachments?
  3. Is there any supported method to trace or retrieve the relationship between the user prompt and the attached file?
