How do I get rid of a grey-colored paragraph symbol at the top of each page? There is no line associated with it and I cannot place my cursor on it.

The paragraph mark is the Header. Once a document has a header, you cannot remove it.
If it really bothers you, you can double-click on the header to open it. Select the paragraph mark, then set the font size to 1pt and the paragraph line spacing to Multiple at 0.1. The paragraph mark will effectively disappear.

What you're describing seems to be a paragraph mark (¶) in the header area or Word's formatting display settings rather than editable text.
In it's the case, you can double-click at the top of the page to open the Header area. If the symbol becomes selectable, delete any empty paragraphs or formatting in the header. These marks can appear on every page because headers repeat throughout the document
If it's simply a displayed formatting mark, you can press Ctrl + Shift + 8 (or click ¶ on the Home tab).
This toggles paragraph marks and other non-printing characters on/off. Word's display options include paragraph marks and other formatting symbols.
Additionally, please go to File > Options > Display. Under Always show these formatting marks on the screen, clear Paragraph marks or Show all formatting marks if they are selected.
