Hi Cornes,
Thank you for reaching out and for sharing your concern.
Microsoft's Office URI Schemes documentation confirms that the ms-excel:ofv|u| URI can be used to launch the locally installed Excel desktop application and open a workbook from an HTTPS URL. Therefore, if you can edit the target URL, you can prepend the Excel URI scheme to your SharePoint file link using the following format: ms-excel:ofv|u|https://yourtenant.sharepoint.com/sites/site/Shared%20Documents/filename.xlsx When users select this link on a device where Microsoft Excel is installed and registered as the handler for the ms-excel protocol, the workbook should open in the Excel desktop application rather than Excel for the web.
Based on the format you referenced from the previous Q&A discussion, modifying the URL by adding ms-excel:ofv|u| before the SharePoint HTTPS address is the supported Office URI Scheme approach for opening the workbook in the Excel desktop application.
If you need a more sustainable solution for a document library that is accessed by a large audience, you may also consider configuring the library to open Office documents in the desktop app by default.
To do this, please reach out to your SharePoint site admin and share these steps:
- Open the SharePoint document library that contains the Excel file.
- Select Settings (gear icon) > Library settings.
- Select More library settings.
- Select Advanced settings.
- Locate Opening Documents in the Browser.
- Change the setting from Open in the browser to Open in the client application.
- Select OK to save the changes.
After this change, users opening Office documents from that library will be directed to the corresponding desktop application by default, provided they have the Office desktop apps installed.
