Word shuts down when I try to run spell check

When I run spell check the editor box shows on the right, as soon as I click spelling, Word shuts down and then restarts with the file recovered.

Hi Barbara,

For your concern, may I ask which Word version you are currently using? Based on your sharing, this is documented as a known issue where Word can unexpectedly close when typing or using authoring features such as spellcheck because of a mismatch between the Office build and installed proofing/language-pack files. The issue is confirmed to be fixed in Version 2409 Build 18025.20000 and later. Therefore, I suggest you should first update Office version via File > Account > Update Options > Update Now if your version is a version before 2409.

If you are using a later version but the issue persists, please run Office Repair by:

Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. 
Find Microsoft Office, right-click, and choose Change. 
Run Quick Repair first. If that doesn’t work, run Online Repair later.
