Word count fails when I add page breaks in MS Word

In a test document of 40,000 words, I have not been able to reproduce the issue. Adding page breaks, or removing them, does not appear to change the word count. Can you share a document which illustrates the issue?

By the way, did you try copying the content into a new, blank document? Omit the final paragraph mark (¶) and also any section breaks when you copy.

This may just be Word struggling with a long document.

Generally, I recommend that you try to avoid manual page breaks, if at all possible. For example, you can incorporate "Page break before" formatting into relevant paragraphs (or paragraph styles).

If you also have section breaks, make sure that you only have as many section breaks as you need.

If you select all the document content, excluding the final paragraph mark, copy and paste it into a new, blank document, does that improve the situation? To see paragraph marks (¶) as well as other nonprinting marks, click the ¶ icon on the Home tab (you can hide them again by clicking that same icon).

This sounds less like a normal “word count” problem and more like Word for Mac struggling to repaginate the document after manual breaks are added. Reinstalling Word often won’t fix it if the problem is in the document structure, Word preferences, Normal template, add-ins, or a current Word for Mac bug.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

First, make a copy of the file, then turn on hidden formatting marks: Home > ¶. Check whether you added simple Page Breaks or accidentally added Section Breaks. If you see section breaks you don’t need, remove them carefully, because they can affect pagination and layout.

Try changing the document view to Draft view, then check the word count again. Long documents with many page/section breaks can make Word work harder in Print Layout view.

Update Word from Help > Check for Updates. Microsoft’s current Word for Mac issue page was last updated in May 2026 and still lists several Word for Mac performance/feature issues, so being fully updated is worth trying.

Reset Word’s preferences and Normal template. I recommend this for Word for Mac problems that persist after reinstalling: quit Word, open Finder, hold Option, choose Go > Library, then check Preferences for Word preference files and move them to the desktop. Also test by moving Normal.dotm from the user templates folder to the desktop. Word will recreate fresh copies.

As a workaround for urgent documents, copy the content into a brand-new blank Word document using Paste Special > Unformatted Text, then reapply page breaks. It is suggested that rebuilding the document this way can clear hidden corruption without losing the wording.

Until fixed, use Pages or Word Online only as a cross-check, not the master file. If both show the higher count, mention that when reporting it through Help > Feedback in Word.
