Welcome Ken Gosse,
I understand how frustrating it can be when PDF files briefly appear in the File Explorer Preview pane and then disappear on Windows 11 Home 24H2 (Build 26100.8655).
Before proceeding, could you please clarify:
- Which application is currently set as the default PDF viewer (Microsoft Edge, Adobe Acrobat Reader, or another PDF application)?
- Does the issue occur with all PDF files or only with files stored in a specific location (for example, Downloads, OneDrive, or a network folder)?
In the meantime, you can try these workaround steps below to troubleshoot the issue:
Option 1: Restart the Explorer process
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Locate Windows Explorer
- Right-click it and select Restart
Option 2: Test with a different default PDF application
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps
- Search for .pdf
- Temporarily switch the default application to another PDF viewer and test the Preview pane again
Option 3: Clear File Explorer cache
- Open File Explorer Options
- Under the General tab, click Clear in the Privacy section
- Close and reopen File Explorer
Option 4: Check Preview Pane settings
- Open File Explorer
- Select View > Show
- Confirm that Preview pane is enabled
- Disable it, close File Explorer, then enable it again
Option 5: Run System File Checker
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator
- Run:
sfc /scannow - Restart the device after the scan completes
I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.
