As of June 22, 2026, my .pdf files in windows 11 Home (24H2, build 26100.8655) File Explorer's preview pane appear for a moment then disappear. It doesn't matter whether I created a .pdf from a Word doc on my PC or whether I downloaded a .pdf then set the Properties to Unblock the file. The previous Windows update finally allowed .pdf files to display immediately once they were Unblocked. Four updates were installed on June 9th, but I did not have this problem until today.

Welcome Ken Gosse,

I understand how frustrating it can be when PDF files briefly appear in the File Explorer Preview pane and then disappear on Windows 11 Home 24H2 (Build 26100.8655).

Before proceeding, could you please clarify:

  • Which application is currently set as the default PDF viewer (Microsoft Edge, Adobe Acrobat Reader, or another PDF application)?
  • Does the issue occur with all PDF files or only with files stored in a specific location (for example, Downloads, OneDrive, or a network folder)?

In the meantime, you can try these workaround steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

Option 1: Restart the Explorer process

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
  • Locate Windows Explorer
  • Right-click it and select Restart

Option 2: Test with a different default PDF application

  • Open Settings > Apps > Default apps
  • Search for .pdf
  • Temporarily switch the default application to another PDF viewer and test the Preview pane again

Option 3: Clear File Explorer cache

  • Open File Explorer Options
  • Under the General tab, click Clear in the Privacy section
  • Close and reopen File Explorer

Option 4: Check Preview Pane settings

  • Open File Explorer
  • Select View > Show
  • Confirm that Preview pane is enabled
  • Disable it, close File Explorer, then enable it again

Option 5: Run System File Checker

  • Open Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Run: sfc /scannow
  • Restart the device after the scan completes

I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.

    I believe I found a fix.

I decided to use Google to search again: “Windows 11 PDF files disappear in explorer window”

Five suggestions were offered (Emma1-N already provided several of them, thank you). I tried #4:

    1. Adjust PowerToys Add-ons

If you have Microsoft PowerToys installed, its built-in preview handlers often conflict with Adobe's PDF previewer.

    Open the PowerToys app.

Navigate to File Management > File Explorer Add-ons.

Toggle off Enable PDF (.pdf) preview.

I opened File Management > File Explorer Add-ons. At the top, it says:

“Select the file types which must be rendered in the Preview Pane. Ensure that Preview Pane is open by toggling the view with Alt + P in File Explorer.

[!] Enabling the preview handlers will override other preview handlers already installed - there have been reports of incompatibility between Outlook and the PDF Preview Handler.

I toggled off “Enable PDF (.pdf) preview.”

My PDF files now display in Windows Explorer without disappearing. This includes files which required Unblocking. As a further test, I shut down and restarted my PC. The files still display as expected.
