To try to recover the missing PowerPoint and OneDrive files, use these steps in order.
- Check PowerPoint’s built‑in recovery options
- Open PowerPoint.
- Go to File > Info.
- Under Manage Presentation, look for any file labeled “(when I closed without saving)” and select it.
- If it opens, select Restore (or Save As) to save it to a safe location.
- Recover unsaved PowerPoint files
If the file does not appear under Manage Presentation:- In PowerPoint, go to File > Info > Manage Presentation > Recover Unsaved Presentations.
- Select any file that matches the name/date/time of the missing work, then choose Open.
- Use Save As immediately to store it in a known folder.
- Use the AutoRecover folder (Windows)
PowerPoint may have AutoRecover copies even if the main file looks damaged or will not open.- In PowerPoint, go to File > Options > Save.
- Note the path shown in AutoRecover file location. By default this is:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\PowerPoint - Open File Explorer and browse to that folder (replace
<username>with the Windows account name). - Look for recent files with names similar to the presentation or with unusual extensions. Try opening them in PowerPoint and then saving them normally if they open.
- If the PowerPoint file appears but will not open
The file may be corrupted. Try Open and Repair:- Open PowerPoint.
- Select File > Open > Browse.
- Navigate to the folder where the problem presentation is stored.
- Click the file once, then select the arrow next to Open and choose Open and Repair.
- If it opens, immediately save a new copy.
- Check OneDrive folder and recycle bin
Since files in the OneDrive folder disappeared, also check:- The OneDrive folder on the PC to see if files are in a different subfolder.
- The OneDrive Recycle Bin (via OneDrive on the web) to see if the files were deleted during the restart. Restore any needed files from there.
- If using Office for Mac (for completeness)
If this scenario is on a Mac instead of Windows, AutoRecover files for PowerPoint are stored under:
/Users/<username>/Library/Containers/com.Microsoft.Powerpoint/Data/Library/Preferences/AutoRecovery
Use Finder > Go > Go To Folder and paste that path (replacing<username>), then try opening any recent AutoRecovery files in PowerPoint and saving them. - Prevent future data loss
After recovery, configure protection so this is less likely to happen again:- In PowerPoint, go to File > Options > Save.
- Ensure Save AutoRecover information every X minutes is turned on and set to a small interval (for example, 5 minutes).
- Confirm the AutoRecover file location is valid and accessible.
- If files are stored on OneDrive or SharePoint and a Microsoft 365 subscription is used, turn on AutoSave in the title bar so changes are saved continuously.
If none of the above methods show any versions of the files (in PowerPoint recovery, AutoRecover folders, or OneDrive Recycle Bin), then the files may not be recoverable and contacting Microsoft Support would be the next step.
