Lost access to Microsoft 365 tenant – Exchange Online still working and invoices still received

Hello everyone,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction regarding a Microsoft 365 tenant access issue.

I have an existing Microsoft 365 tenant:

[Moderator note: personal info removed].onmicrosoft.com

The subscription is still active:

  • Exchange Online (Plan 1)

2 licenses

Microsoft continues to send invoices to me every month

The subscription is still being charged to my credit card

I have current invoices and proof of payment

The strange part is that I still have access to the mailbox that receives these invoices, and I can send and receive emails normally. However, I can no longer access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center or identify the administrator account associated with the tenant.

I am trying to determine whether it is possible to recover access to the tenant.

Current situation:

Tenant exists and is active

Subscription is active and billed

I have access to the email address receiving the invoices

I no longer know which Global Administrator account is assigned to the tenant

Sign-in attempts do not lead me to the tenant, and some account recovery options do not find the account

My questions are:

Is there any way to identify which administrator accounts are currently associated with the tenant?

Can access be recovered based on the tenant name ([Moderator note: personal info removed].onmicrosoft.com) and billing information?

Is there a formal Microsoft process for recovering a Global Administrator account when the tenant owner can provide invoices, payment information, and proof of ownership?

Has anyone experienced a situation where Exchange Online continues to work, but access to the Microsoft 365 tenant and admin account has been lost?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Markus König

I understand how concerning it must be to still have an active, billed Microsoft 365 subscription while losing access to the admin center and not being able to identify the Global Administrator account.

Please understand that this is a public peer-to-peer community forum. As a moderator, I do not have access to Microsoft’s internal systems and data. Therefore, I’m not able to verify your tenant or determine whether account recovery is possible in your specific case. Only Microsoft Support has the ability to investigate tenant-level ownership and perform recovery actions if applicable.

In this situation, there are two possible ways to reach Microsoft Support:

1.Please visit the following page and contact Microsoft Support by phone: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

From what I know, you will need to get past the initial AI system to reach the live support team. You can refer to the guide below for tips on how to get through more easily:

2.If method 1 is not working, please follow this link to create a trial tenant: Microsoft 365 Business Basic | Microsoft 365 - after that you will be able to access the Microsoft 365 Admin Center to raise a support ticket.

Assuming that you have already created an account after registering a free trial and you can go to Microsoft 365 admin center and click "Help & support" icon to raise your ticket.

When submitting the ticket, please clearly explain that you are raising this on behalf of the affected tenant that you no longer have access to. The support team will help you create the case under the affected tenant and escalate it to the appropriate team for further assistance.

For further instructions, you can follow this guide: Get support - Microsoft 365 admin | Microsoft Learn

Note: this trial is available for 30 days. Before the expiration date, please go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center and proceed to cancel the trial to prevent further charges as this trial tenant is used for ticket creation. For instructions, please refer to: Cancel your Microsoft business subscription in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

Thank you for your understanding.
