Hi there, I am writing a CV using Word. The first page is completed. How can I lock the first page so that I do not accidentally change anything while continuing to work on the rest of the document.

When editing important documents, use File>Save As on a regular basis, changing the name slightly. Then, if you find at a later edition of the document, that there are undesirable changes on the first page, you have an original file to go back to.

Use Word's Restrict Editing feature to make the whole document "Read Only," and then designate the blank remainder of your CV as an editable exception.

  1. Insert a Section Break: Place your cursor at the very end of your first page. Go to the Layout tab, click Breaks, and select Next Page under Section Breaks.
  2. Open Restrict Editing: Go to the Review tab on your ribbon and click Restrict Editing. This will open a task pane on the right side of your screen.
  3. Set Editing Restrictions: In the task pane, check the box under Editing restrictions that says Allow only this type of editing in the document. Ensure the dropdown menu beneath it is set to No changes (Read only).
  4. Make an Exception: Click and drag your cursor to highlight all the blank space on the second page (the area where you want to continue typing). In the Restrict Editing pane under Exceptions, check the box for Everyone.
  5. Start Protection: Click the Yes, Start Enforcing Protection button at the bottom of the task pane. Word will prompt you to create an optional password (which is highly recommended so you don't accidentally turn off the protection).

Once this is applied, you can type and edit on page two, but your first page will remain locked from any accidental changes. You can unlock the document at any time by clicking Stop Protection in the Restrict Editing pane and entering your password.

    Select your first page.

Click on the Developer Tab and then Group.

You want to group the selection.
