Leaving a Microsoft family group depends on the role in the group and who granted consent for the account.
- Try leaving the family group directly:
- Using a web browser, go to https://family.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with the account that is stuck in the family group.
- Select the three dots ( … ) or the menu next to the account name.
- Choose Leave family group.
- Confirm by selecting Remove.
- If the account is a child/member and cannot leave on its own:
- Only an organizer can remove a member.
- For a child account, only the adult who originally granted consent can remove that child from the family group.
- If that organizer’s account is locked and cannot be accessed, that adult/guardian must attempt to recover their account and then remove the child:
- The organizer signs in at https://family.microsoft.com (after recovering their account).
- Selects the child’s name.
- Selects Remove consent for this child’s account.
- Goes back to the family group and selects Remove from family group.
- Important behavior of family groups:
- Family groups without an organizer and at least one other family member are deleted automatically.
- Leaving or being removed from a family group does not delete the Microsoft account itself.
If the organizer cannot recover the account and no other organizer exists, there is no self-service way in the provided guidance to remove a child/member account; in that case, follow the account recovery guidance for the organizer or contact Microsoft support using the standard support channels.
