A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Hello OnaPhys,
From your steps, you’re following the correct process, so nothing is missing in how you’re doing the distribution.
When Cross Notebook Distribution fails at the final “Distribute” step with an “Uh oh!” message, it’s usually not a workflow issue. It’s typically caused by one of the following:
1. Class Notebook add‑in missing or OneNote installation issue on Windows desktop app:
The distribution feature relies on the Class Notebook integration. If that component is not working properly, the process will fail at the last step even though everything looks correct. Several cases with the same symptom were resolved by repairing OneNote or the Class Notebook add‑in.
You can try these suggestions:
Repairing Microsoft 365
- Close all office apps completely.
- Go to Control Panel > Program > Programs and Features
- Right click on the Microsoft Office you've installed > Change.
- Select Quick Repair first (fast and doesn’t require internet).
- If the issue persists, back up all important files and run Online Repair (requires internet and takes longer).
Making sure the Class Notebook add‑in is installed and enabled
- Open Windows Settings (press Windows + I)
- Go to Apps > Installed apps
- In the search bar, type “OneNote” and check whether “Class Notebook Add-in for OneNote” is installed
- If it’s not installed, download it here: Install Class Notebook Add-in for OneNote app | Microsoft Support
2. Browser/session issue (if using OneNote on the web)
If you’re doing this in OneNote Online, cached data or cookies can break the distribution request. The “Report” button not doing anything is often a sign of this.
Try:
- Opening OneNote in an InPrivate/Incognito window
- Trying a different browser
- Signing out and back in, or clearing site data
This type of session problem is a common cause of the exact “Uh oh!” behavior at the final step.
3. Notebook permissions or structure issues
Cross‑notebook distribution depends on the target notebooks being fully functional Class Notebooks. If permissions are out of sync or the default structure has been altered, the operation can fail at the final stage.
You can test this by:
- Running “Fix Permissions” for the Class Notebook (in the web management tools):
- Go to the Fix notebooks page.
- Find the notebook people are having trouble with, then select Fix Permissions.
- When you see Permissions Fixed, ask students or staff to close and reopen the notebook.
- Trying to distribute to a different class notebook
If the issue persists after trying these steps, I recommend engaging Microsoft Support for further investigation. This type of issue may require backend analysis that is not visible from standard settings or documentation.
Microsoft Support has access to backend telemetry, tenant-level diagnostics, and service health insights that are not available through standard documentation or community channels. This deeper level of analysis will help determine whether the issue is related to a service change, a tenant-specific condition, or an emerging platform issue that requires escalation.
For Education Support: please ask your organization's Microsoft 365 admin for assistance to create a support request:
- Find your Microsoft 365 admin: If you don't know who the global admin is in your organization, you can find guidance here: How can I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support
- Submit a service request: The Global Administrator should create a support request with Microsoft to receive advanced technical assistance: Contact - Microsoft Support
- If your subscription is from a partner or reseller, contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.
If you discover any solutions or have additional insights, please consider replying to this thread to help others in the community.
I sincerely apologize for redirecting you to the Microsoft Technical Support Team. While I strive to assist as much as possible here in the forum, my resources are limited when it comes to backend-level diagnostics and advanced troubleshooting.
Thank you, and please let me know if you need any further assistance.
