Fail to sync my account

2026-06-16T04:38:51.66+00:00

I graduated from university for 2 years. Today I want to use my student account (which has become alumni account) to access my note in OneNote. And find out that all notes can’t be opened and all folder appears to be empty. Message say that there is error in syncing and ask me to retry and wait. I have tried many time. I really want to get back those notes. My 4 years effort.

Dear @CHAN, Tsz Ching Choco [Alumni],

To ensure I understand your request correctly and to support you as effectively as possible, I need more specific information from you:

    • Have you ever opened your OneNote after your graduation? Or this is the first time since then?
    • Could you share a screenshot of the issue message (please remember to remove the personally identifiable information)?

In the meantime, kindly try these steps:

1> Check the notebooks in the browser first

Go to OneNote for the web or OneDrive on the web and sign in with the same alumni/school account that should contain the notes.

If the notebooks open normally in the browser and your notes are there, then the data is probably still in the cloud and the problem is with the local OneNote app/session.

If the notebook does not appear in the browser, or it opens empty there too, then this is more likely a permission/license/storage/location issue on the university side rather than a local app issue. Fix issues with opening notebooks | Microsoft Learn

2> Check whether the notebook was deleted or moved

Deleted notebooks can sometimes be recovered from OneDrive Recycle Bin, and if the notebook was moved/renamed you may need to open it from the new location. Recover missing notes in OneNote | Microsoft Learn

If the web is also empty, please contact university IT team and ask them:

Whether your alumni account still has OneDrive/OneNote service enabled.

Whether the notebook is still in your OneDrive or a SharePoint location and whether your account still has permission to it.

Whether the notebook was deleted or moved, and if so, whether it can be restored from OneDrive Recycle Bin or from admin-side recovery.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.

The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.
