A module within Microsoft Viva that serves as an enterprise social networking platform. It fosters community building, open dialogue, and knowledge sharing across an organization.
In Viva Engage, the ability to create a new community depends on Microsoft 365 group creation permissions and any group creation policy applied in the tenant.
To create a community, the UI path is:
- In Viva Engage, select the + button next to the Explore section in the left navigation bar.
- Select Community from the drop-down.
- Fill in the Community creation dialog and select Create.
If the + button or Community option does not appear, it means a group creation policy has been configured so that only specific users are allowed to create communities and other entities in Viva Engage. In that case, even if Microsoft 365 groups can be created elsewhere, community creation in Viva Engage is restricted by that policy.
As an admin, to confirm and control this:
- Check who is allowed to create Microsoft 365 groups in the tenant. Viva Engage communities in native mode create a connected Microsoft 365 group, so any restriction on group creation directly affects who can create communities.
- In the Viva Engage admin center, verify that the network is configured for Microsoft 365-connected communities and review who has group creation privileges. Only users with group creation permission can create Microsoft 365-connected communities.
If group creation is restricted and the account is not in the allowed list, an Engage admin or Microsoft 365 admin must update the group creation policy to include that account or broaden who can create groups.
