Seeing who completed tasks

Can you confirm whether we can access the Planner completed By property through Microsoft Graph and generate a report showing:

  • Task title
  • Plan name
  • Completion date
  • Completed by user
  • Assigned users

Ideally we'd like historical data as well as an ongoing report.

For current task state, Microsoft Graph can provide most of the required fields from the Planner task and plan resources:

  • Task title → plannerTask.title
  • Plan name → via planId → plannerPlan.title
  • Completion date → completedDateTime
  • Completed by → completedBy
  • Assigned users → assignments

For historical reporting, the standard Planner API primarily exposes current state, not a full activity history

In summary, current reporting is supported via Microsoft Graph, but full historical reporting requires delta tracking or audit logs (both currently limited and/or in beta).

    Yes, this should be possible using Microsoft Graph. Planner task resources expose several properties that can help you build the type of report you're looking for, including:

    • Task title
    • Completion date (completedDateTime)
    • Completed by user (completedBy)
    • Assigned users (assignments)

    In addition, you can retrieve the related plan information and use it to include the plan name in your report. As a result, you can generate a report that contains:

    • Task title
    • Plan name
    • Completion date
    • Completed by user
    • Assigned users

    For ongoing reporting, you could schedule Microsoft Graph queries and export the results to a reporting solution such as Power BI, Excel, or a custom database. This approach allows you to keep the report up to date automatically.

    That said, it's worth noting that Microsoft Graph only returns the data that currently exists in Planner. While you can retrieve completion details for tasks that are still present in a plan, Planner is not intended to serve as a long-term auditing or historical reporting platform. Consequently, if completed tasks are later deleted, their information is typically no longer available through Microsoft Graph.

    If your goal is to maintain a historical record over time, a good practice would be to periodically extract and store the task data in a separate repository for reporting and audit purposes.
