New outlook "add to calendar" does not work, ever. Why?

Please bring back Outlook Classic's capabilities so I can add items to my calendar from email.

Can't open an ICS file nor can a user drag an email to the calendar like before.

The new Outlook DOES NOT WORK, no matter how many file and program associations I set correctly. I've tried every troubleshooting tip I can find - No Luck.

I am curious as to why MS won't fix this.

I understand your frustration. Having to browse through folders just to locate the downloaded .ics file is not as convenient as the workflow in Outlook Classic.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators, contributors including external Microsoft employees cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back-end systems. In new Outlook for Windows, the documented method to import an .ics file is still to go to Calendar > Add calendar > Upload from file > Browse, then select the .ics file and choose Import. At this time, I haven’t found an official setting that restores the same direct “open the .ics file and add it immediately to the calendar” behavior that Outlook Classic provides.

Setting the Windows file association may help choose which app opens .ics files in general, but new Outlook still uses the Calendar import flow for adding the file to your calendar.

If this one-step .ics workflow is important for your daily use, the most practical workaround for now is to use Outlook Classic for this specific task. Outlook Classic can still be used side by side with new Outlook.

    Okay, so the .ICS file gets downloaded to a temp file buried five layers down in File Explorer.

    To add this to my calendar I have to browse my PC trying to locate the downloaded >ICS file, then upload it into Outlook.

    This is really a bogus approach. Why can't I just click on the .ICS file and open it directly???

    And, why make it so inconvenient to find the downloaded file??
