Hello,

I am a retired physics teacher from Estonia. I continue to support my former students by helping them learn data engineering and related technical skills free of charge. For this purpose, I actively use Microsoft Copilot to prepare educational materials and guide them through practical exercises.

In the free version of Copilot, the daily usage limit is reached very quickly, which interrupts the learning process and delays the preparation of study materials. Since my work is purely educational and non‑commercial, I would like to kindly ask whether Microsoft could provide access to a Copilot license (such as Copilot Pro or an equivalent educational license) that would remove or increase these usage limitations.

My goal is to continue offering free technical education to young people, and Copilot has been an invaluable tool in this mission.

If needed, I can provide additional information about my educational activities.

Best regards,

K. Ridaste

Microsoft does not provide free individual upgrades from the free Microsoft Copilot to Copilot Pro or other paid Copilot licenses based on educational use cases.

For enhanced Copilot capabilities in education, the supported options in the Microsoft ecosystem are:

    1. Use free Microsoft education tools where available
Educators can use a range of free AI-related tools and training resources from Microsoft Education to support teaching and learning, such as:
      • Free Microsoft Copilot (web, Edge, Windows)
      • Learning Accelerators, Reading Progress, and other built-in tools in Microsoft 365 Education
      • Free AI training paths and modules for educators and students, for example:
        • “Embark on your AI journey with free AI tools from Microsoft Education”
        • “Enhance teaching and learning with Microsoft Copilot”
        • “AI in education” learning path
These are listed under AI for education resources.
    2. Microsoft 365 Education for eligible schools
If learners are part of an eligible institution, the school can sign up for Microsoft 365 Education at no cost, giving access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Teams for Education. This environment is the foundation for many Copilot-in-education scenarios and other AI-powered tools.
Schools can get started at the Microsoft 365 Education site and manage access centrally.
    3. Institutional Copilot offerings (school-managed)
For deeper Copilot integration and fewer limitations, institutions (not individuals) can license:
      • Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 / Microsoft 365 Copilot for Education: integrated into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams, with commercial data protection and education-focused features (lesson plans, quizzes, AI feedback, alignment to education standards).
      • Microsoft 365 Copilot Studio in education: for building tailored AI experiences in an educational tenant. These are purchased and assigned by a school or organization’s IT/admin team; they are not granted as individual complimentary licenses.
    4. Azure for Students and Azure Dev Tools for Teaching (for technical skills)
For data engineering and broader technical education, students at eligible institutions can receive:
      • Azure for Students: $100 in Azure credit plus access to more than 25 free Azure services annually.
      • Azure Dev Tools for Teaching: free access to professional developer tools and software for STEM-focused courses. These programs are institution- or student-verified and do not include Copilot Pro, but they support hands-on technical learning.

To expand Copilot capabilities beyond the free tier, the practical path is for a school, university, or training organization to:

    • Use Microsoft 365 Education as the base platform.
    • Evaluate and, if appropriate, purchase Microsoft 365 Copilot for Education or Copilot for Microsoft 365 for faculty/staff accounts.

Individual educators working independently do not have a documented path in the provided materials to receive complimentary Copilot Pro or equivalent licenses from Microsoft.
