How to fix visibility of Styles panel

Why does my Styles panel look like this and how can I fix it?

It has nothing to do with the height of the window.

The only way I can choose a style is to hover over each until a popup reveals the one I'm looking for.

Running Word for Mac, Version 16.110. It is NOT MS 365. It's a stand-alone desktop version.

This is the result of having edited the document in another program, such as Apple's Pages.app. No disrespect intended but nothing suggested by Xavier-D can resolve it & AFAIK there is no instant fix. There are several useful methods suggested in some of the threads on this page, all of which are time-consuming.

Another possible option is to copy all of the content except the final ¶ then paste into a new blank document using Keep Text Only or Edit> paste Special -Unformatted Text the create & apply the appropriate Styles.

You're absolutely right. I wrote a book in Pages. Forced by my editor to save it to Word. He uploaded to Google Docs and made notations. I downloaded it to work on it offline. Very unpleasant workflow, and I have tons of issues with Word. Example: I have many subheads in the nav bar which I use for—what else?—navigation. But if I'm in one section of the doc and I scroll the nav bar, it just bounces back to the general area I'm in; so I can't reach the faraway subhead I want to click. Oh, and no help files, cuz I don't want "experiences."

Anyway. Thank you for your reply. I'll just live with the inconvenience.

Another thought which I haven't had the opportunity to test: Pages has been improved so you may be able to open the document & resave it as .rtf or perhaps a more successful export as .docx – try with a copy, though, not the original just to be safe.

My Pages doc is fine. It's the Word version of the doc that has the problem, or rather the Word app itself. I have resaved the Word doc many times over the past five months. Word has behaved this way from the start. My editor is a windows guy—we are not compatible! I suppose I'm stuck with the inconvenient Styles panel.

Are you opening the .pages file in Word or are you using the File> Export method of generating a Word document in the .docx file type?

I'm not attempting to defend but the problem is not caused by Word. Pages simply is a different program which isn't compatible with other programs, especially in its earlier generations.

I exported the Pages doc to Word ages ago. In February, I think. I uploaded it to Google Docs, as my editor insisted. Since then, it has always been a Word doc. Never opened in Pages. I can't start over with the doc because it contains a history of revisions and comments.

I can see that you are having issue with Word, thanks for sharing the screenshot and the Word version details.

From the image, the Styles pane is not just too small and the style previews themselves appear to be clipped or rendered at an unusual scale. Since resizing the window does not help, here are what you can do next:

First, try widening or undocking the Styles pane if Word allows it. Office task panes can usually be resized or undocked, and Office may remember the last pane size/position.
In the Styles pane, check whether there is an option to disable style previews or change the displayed list, such as switching List: Recommended to another option like All Styles or Styles in Use. This may make the style names easier to identify.
Test with a new blank document. If the Styles pane looks normal there, the issue may be related to the styles or template used by the current document.
If it happens in all documents, try resetting Word’s preferences or Normal template after closing Word. This can help if the pane layout or Word profile data is corrupted.
Also check whether the issue changes when using a different macOS display scaling setting or after temporarily disabling third-party font managers/add-ins, as font/display rendering can affect how Office content appears.

Hello Xavier. None of those options worked. Widening the styles pane did nothing. Undocking is impossible. Switching to List: Recommended did nothing. Opening a new blank doc was the same. It's just a lousy program trying to be everything instead of what I need: a competent word processor. Thanks for checking back.

Thanks for getting back and for confirming what you already tried.

I understand the frustration, especially when the issue affects something as basic as being able to read and choose styles properly. Since another community member has now stepped in and is helping with this issue, I’ll let them handle this.
