Perform these steps on the iMac to resolve PowerPoint and Excel not opening while Word works:
- Quit all Office apps.
- Remove the existing Office apps:
- Open Finder → Applications.
- Select Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Outlook (Command+click to multi-select).
- Ctrl+click and choose “Move to Trash.”
- Remove Office data containers:
- In Finder, select Go → Go to Folder and enter
~/Library/Containers/. - Move to Trash any folders starting with:

com.microsoft.Excel -
com.microsoft.Powerpoint -
com.microsoft.Outlook -
com.microsoft.OneNote(if present)

- Go back to
~/Libraryand openGroup Containers. - Move to Trash (if present):

- In Finder, select Go → Go to Folder and enter
- Reinstall Office for Mac for the Home 2024/Office 2019/2021/2024 license:
- Download the appropriate Office for Mac installer package from the official Microsoft links in the documentation (for example, Office 2024 for Mac Installer, Office 2021 for Mac Installer, or Office 2019 for Mac Installer, depending on the purchased product).
- Open the downloaded package and complete installation.
- After installation, start Word, then Excel and PowerPoint, and sign in with the same account used to purchase Home 2024 so they can activate.
If Excel or PowerPoint still will not open or keep asking to sign in, ensure the Microsoft Office Licensing helper is enabled in macOS Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions (Microsoft Office Licensing) and then restart the Mac.
