I understand the frustration when the assessment stays stuck at "Performing Assessment" well beyond the expected 4-hour window. Let me walk you through the most likely causes and how to investigate them.

1. Check the Scheduled Task on the Data Collection Machine

On the server where the AD Assessment is configured, open Task Scheduler → navigate to Microsoft → Operations Management Suite → AOI* → Assessments**. Look at the History tab for the AD Assessment task. If you see errors with EventId 101 (or 104) and ErrorValue 2147943726, the scheduled task account password may have expired or become invalid. In that case, you would need to re-run the Add-ADAssessmentTask cmdlet with valid credentials.

Also, open Task Manager and check if omsassessment.exe is running. If it has been running for an extended period (like an entire day), the process may be stuck , often caused by antivirus software blocking scripts or dependencies. Adding an exception in your antivirus for the assessment working directory can help resolve this.

2. Verify Recommendation Files Are Being Generated

Go to the assessment working directory and look for files in the format new.recommendations.*.adrecs. If no such files exist, the data collection itself is failing. If files do exist but data isn't showing in Log Analytics, it's an upload issue.

3. Check the Prerequisites File for Errors

In the same working directory, open the processed.prerequisites file and look for any errors related to your 3 DCs such as WMI connectivity issues, credential failures, or network errors. If errors are found, resolve them and then re-trigger the assessment from Task Scheduler.

4. Verify DCR File Path Mapping (Important for Azure Arc Machines)

Since you're using Azure Arc, there's a known consideration: the DCR must have the correct working directory path mapped. To verify:

• Go to Azure Portal → Data Collection Rules
• Locate the DCR associated with your AD Assessment (it should contain the ODA reference)
• Select Export Template and look for filePatterns in the JSON
• Ensure the path points to the correct folder where recommendation files are created on your data collection machine

If the path is incorrect, update it and re-run the data collection.

5. Confirm Azure Arc Machine and Log Analytics Workspace Are in the Same Resource Group

Services Hub Connector currently has a limitation, it can only discover Arc machines that are in the same resource group as the Log Analytics workspace. If they are in different resource groups, the assessment won't work as expected.

6. Verify Data in Log Analytics

Run this query in your Log Analytics workspace → Logs:

ADAssessmentRecommendation
| where TimeGenerated > ago(24h)
| take 10

If this returns no results, the data hasn't been uploaded yet, confirming the issue is on the data collection or upload side.
