Use the built-in Windows Update troubleshooting steps for Windows 7 and then try updating again.

    1. Restart Windows and install updates in a clean boot state Performing a clean boot helps ensure no other applications or services block Windows Update. Follow the clean boot steps in this article: how to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista. After configuring a clean boot, install Windows Updates again:
      1. Select the Start button.
      2. In the search box, type Update, then select Windows Update from the results.
      3. Try to install Windows Updates again.
    2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter The Windows Update troubleshooter can automatically detect and fix many update problems. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter as described in the Windows Update troubleshooting article. It will check services, components, and common error conditions.
    3. Verify date and time settings Incorrect date/time can interfere with Windows Update.
      1. Select Start > Settings > Time & language.
      2. Select Date & time.
      3. Turn on Set time automatically and, if available, select Sync now.
    4. Check disk space and drivers
      1. Make sure there is enough free disk space (at least 16 GB for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit when upgrading or installing larger updates).
      2. Update third‑party drivers (especially network, video, and other key hardware) from the hardware manufacturer’s website, then run Windows Update again.
    5. Run Windows Update again and restart
      1. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      2. Install available updates.
      3. Restart the PC to apply installed updates.

If updates still fail and the error persists after these steps, an in‑place upgrade (repair install) of Windows 7 using the original installation DVD can restore the system files and update components, after which all updates not on the DVD must be reinstalled.

For an in‑place upgrade on Windows 7:

    1. Insert the Windows 7 DVD.
    2. If Setup does not start automatically, select Start, type Drive:\setup.exe (replace Drive with the DVD drive letter), and select Setup.exe.
    3. In the Setup window, select Install Now.
    4. Select Go online to obtain the latest updates for installation (recommended).
    5. Select the Windows 7 edition to upgrade, accept the license terms, and on Which type of installation do you want?, select Upgrade.
    6. When installation completes, restart the computer and run Windows Update again.

Before doing an in‑place upgrade, back up personal files as recommended in the article.
