Windows 11 detects my iPhone in Device Manager but not in File Explorer or Apple Devices

Hello everyone,

I am facing a strange issue with my iPhone 12 on a Windows 11 desktop PC.

Environment:

  • Windows 11
  • ASRock B450M Steel Legend motherboard
  • iPhone 12 (iOS 26.5)
  • Apple Devices app version 1.1540.23042.0

Problem: Windows detects the iPhone at the device level, but it does not appear in File Explorer and Apple Devices cannot detect it.

Current behavior:

  • Apple Devices always shows "Connect your device"
  • iPhone does not appear under This PC/File Explorer
  • USB tethering does not work
  • Unable to create local iPhone backups

What Windows detects: Device Manager shows all of the following:

  • Apple iPhone
  • Apple Mobile Device USB Device
  • Apple Mobile Device USB Composite Device
  • Apple Mobile Device Ethernet

All devices report: "This device is working properly."

Additional information:

  • Trust prompt appears on the iPhone
  • Windows correctly identifies the device as an iPhone
  • Apple USB drivers are installed
  • Apple Mobile Device Ethernet loads correctly
  • Apple Devices package status is "OK"
  • Bonjour service is running

The confusing part is that Windows clearly sees the device in Device Manager, but neither File Explorer nor Apple Devices can access it.

Has anyone seen a situation where:

  1. Device Manager detects the iPhone correctly,
  2. The Apple USB drivers load correctly,
  3. But the iPhone never appears in File Explorer and Apple Devices shows "Connect your device"?

Could this be related to:

  • Portable Devices / MTP registration
  • Device Association Service
  • Windows USB device registration cache
  • Windows shell integration for mobile devices
  • A corrupted device association entry

Any advanced troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

    Welcome Niilesh,

I understand how frustrating it can be when your iPhone is detected correctly in Device Manager, but it does not appear in File Explorer or Apple Devices, even though drivers and services seem to load fine.

Please try the steps below to troubleshoot the issue:

Option 1: Force the correct Apple driver binding

    • Open Device Manager from the Start menu
    • Locate the iPhone under Universal Serial Bus devices or Portable Devices
    • Right‑click > Update driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick
    • If Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is listed, select it
    • If not:
      • Click Have Disk
      • Browse to:  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
      • Select usbaapl64.inf

Option 2: Remove and re-enumerate the device

    • In Device Manager: uninstall all entries related to:
      • Apple iPhone
      • Apple Mobile Device USB
      • Apple Mobile Device Ethernet
    • Disconnect the phone
    • Reboot the PC
    • Reconnect the iPhone and trust again

Option 3: Check Apple Mobile Device Service

    • Open Services from the Start menu
    • Restart Apple Mobile Device Service
    • If not running, start it manually

Option 4: Reset USB device enumeration cache

    • Disconnect all USB devices
    • Shut down PC completely
    • Power on and reconnect only the iPhone
    • Use a direct motherboard USB port (avoid front panel or hubs)

I hope the steps above help you deal with your issue.
