My copilot was giving wonderful information, but it quit working, and I wound up deleting it. Now I have to pay a fee to use it and when I tried the teen version, it wasn't giving me the correct information for my genealogy. How can I get my copilot back on my new Windows 11 pc?

On a new Windows 11 PC, Copilot is an app that can be installed (or reinstalled) for free from Microsoft Store.

To get Copilot back on Windows 11:

  1. Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
  2. In the search box, type Copilot.
  3. Select the Copilot app (from Microsoft) and choose Install.
  4. After installation, Copilot should appear on the taskbar or in the Start menu.

If Copilot was previously removed:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Search for Copilot to confirm it is removed.
  3. If it appears, select the … menu and choose Uninstall to fully remove it, then reinstall from Microsoft Store as above.

If Copilot still doesn’t appear or work correctly, use the built-in troubleshooters:

  1. Open the Get Help app on Windows.
  2. In the search bar, enter Copilot License Troubleshooter or Copilot connectivity troubleshooter.
  3. Follow the steps provided to check for license or connectivity issues.

Note: Some advanced options (like removing or blocking Copilot via PowerShell) are intended for IT admins and should only be used if managing multiple devices.

    Hi Meredith Skeeters,

I understand how confusing this can be, especially if Copilot was working well before and now it looks like you need to pay just to get it back.

First, just to clarify: the regular Microsoft Copilot app can be installed again from the Microsoft Store, and Microsoft Copilot can also be used from a web browser at Copilot.com. A paid subscription such as Copilot Pro or Microsoft 365 Copilot is only for extra features or deeper Microsoft 365 integration, so you should not normally need to pay just to reinstall the basic Copilot app on Windows 11.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators and community contributors do not have access to your account, billing status, or Microsoft Store purchase details, to better understand the issue, could you please confirm a few details?

    • When you see the message asking you to pay, where does it appear: Microsoft Store, the Copilot app, Microsoft 365, or a web page?
    • Are you signing in with a personal Microsoft account, or a work/school account?
    • In Microsoft Store, does the app show as Microsoft Copilot, and does it show Get/Install or a price?
    • Can you use Copilot from Copilot.com in Microsoft Edge with the same account?
    • When you mention the “teen version,” do you mean the age rating shown in Microsoft Store, or did you install a different Copilot-related app?

In the meantime, please try these steps:

    • Open Microsoft Store on your Windows 11 PC.
    • Search for Microsoft Copilot.
    • Select Get or Install to reinstall the app.
    • After installation, open Copilot from the Start menu and sign in with your personal Microsoft account.
    • If the Store version still asks for payment, try opening Copilot in Microsoft Edge from Copilot.com and sign in with the same account.
    • If the app opens but does not work correctly, go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Copilot > Advanced options, then try Repair first. If that does not help, try Reset.
    • Also open Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates, then install any available app updates and restart the PC.

About genealogy results, Copilot can help with research ideas, summaries, and search guidance, but family history information should still be checked against reliable records such as census documents, birth/death records, archive records, or family documents. If the answers seem wrong, it may help to give Copilot more specific details and ask it to cite or explain the source of the information.

While my initial response may not fully resolve the issue, I truly appreciate your cooperation as we work together toward identifying the most effective solution. Thank you so much for your understanding.
