System setup:

  • Dual-boot PC (Windows + Parrot OS)
  • Work-managed device

Issue:

-Parrot OS partition suddenly requests a disk password

  • No memory of creating any encryption password

Questions:

  • Can Windows BitLocker encrypt or lock the Linux-accessible drive?

-Where should I look for the BitLocker recovery key if that's the cause?

Hello Alba Martin,

In a dual‑boot setup, what you’re seeing is very likely related to Windows BitLocker. BitLocker can encrypt the entire Windows partition, and when another operating system like Parrot OS tries to access that disk, it will prompt for the encryption key. That’s why you’re suddenly being asked for a password even though you don’t recall setting one manually, BitLocker is often enabled automatically on work‑managed devices.

To confirm, check in Windows under Control Panel > BitLocker Drive Encryption to see if the system drive is protected. If it is, the recovery key is required to unlock it from outside Windows. Recovery keys are usually stored in one of these places:

In your Azure AD or Intune account if the device is work‑managed.

In your personal Microsoft account (https://account.microsoft.com/devices).

Printed or saved by your IT department when BitLocker was first enabled.

Without the recovery key, Linux distributions like Parrot OS cannot mount the encrypted drive. The good news is that once you locate the recovery key, you can unlock the disk from Parrot OS or simply access it through Windows as usual.
