Startups: Companies that are in their initial stages of business and typically developing a business model and seeking financing.
Azure credits from Microsoft for Startups do not automatically appear just because the welcome email was received or the Microsoft for Startups portal can be accessed. There are two key requirements:
- Credits must be activated on an Azure subscription.
- The signed-in account must have access to the subscription where those credits are applied.
Follow these steps:
- Confirm activation and timing
- Credits must be activated within 90 days of accepting the Microsoft for Startups program agreement; otherwise, the offer expires and reapplication is required.
- After activation, credits can take several hours to appear in the Azure portal. They can be verified under Cost Management + Billing → Payment methods in the Azure portal.
- Use the same Microsoft Account (MSA) that activated the credits
- Azure startup benefits must be activated using the same personal Microsoft Account (MSA) used during program registration (for example, a personal Gmail-based MSA). Work or school (Entra ID) accounts can cause activation or visibility issues.
- If unsure which MSA was used to activate the credits, sign in to the Azure Portal with each possible personal account and check Subscriptions to see which one has the startup subscription and credits.
- Check whether credits were applied to a different subscription/billing profile
- If there is an existing pay-as-you-go subscription under the same MSA, credits might not automatically apply there. In that case, subscriptions may need to be linked to the same billing profile via an Azure support request.
- If accessing as a team member rather than the activator
- Azure credits are tied to a specific Azure subscription, not to every team member in Microsoft for Startups.
- If the startup subscription exists and credits are active, but the signed-in account shows a message like “You’re not currently assigned to your startup’s Azure subscription,” then access to that subscription has not been granted.
- In that case, the subscription owner (the person who activated the credits) must assign an appropriate Azure role to the account following the steps in Steps to assign an Azure role - Azure RBAC | Microsoft Learn.
- If credits still do not appear
- If activation is within 90 days, the correct MSA is being used, and there is still no visible sponsored subscription or credits under Cost Management + Billing, contact Microsoft for Startups Program Support via the Microsoft for Startups portal “?” help icon or via the startup support link in the program documentation to investigate the entitlement and activation status.
Once correctly activated and the right account/subscription is used, the credits are valid for up to two years, and all subscriptions under the billing account where the sponsorship is allocated can use those credits.
