I can't download Azure Entra ID Connect. How can I resolve this error? I need to assign a license to an existing user.

The duplicate proxy address must be made unique directly in the directory where the object is sourced; Entra Connect is not required to fix the data itself.

Use these steps:

  1. Identify which address is duplicated
    • The error message for license assignment or sync will indicate the conflicting proxy address value (for example, ******@contoso.com).
    • Determine which two or more objects are using this same proxy address.
  2. Decide which object should keep the address
    • Choose the single user (or object) that should own that SMTP/proxy address.
    • All other objects must not have that same value.
  3. Remove or change the duplicate value on the wrong object(s)
    • Make the change in the source directory for that object:
      • If the object is on-premises AD, edit the proxyAddresses attribute there (for example, via AD Users and Computers or another directory tool) and remove or change the duplicate SMTP value.
      • If the object is cloud-only in Microsoft Entra ID, edit the email/aliases on that cloud object and remove the duplicate proxy address.
    • In some cases, if the extra object is not needed, delete that conflicting object instead.
  4. Re-check and assign the license
    • After the duplicate proxy address is removed from the wrong object, the attribute becomes unique.
    • Retry the license assignment for the existing user; the “Proxy address is already being used” / duplicate proxy address error should no longer occur.

If there are multiple duplicates or if it is unclear which object is wrong, review each conflicting object’s proxyAddresses and business usage, and remove the duplicate from the object that should not receive mail for that address.
