Receiving e-mails on my phone but not my laptop. Had issues earlier and changed my password, etc. I've rebooted twice and continue to get an error message on the laptop. Ideas? Not sending or receiving. This is the first problem I've had in quite some time.

Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

To help narrow down the issue:

  1. What is the exact error message you see on the laptop? A screenshot would be helpful if possible.
  2. Is this a Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live) or a third-party email account such as Gmail, Yahoo, or an ISP email?
  3. Are you using Outlook, the Mail app, or are you accessing your email through a web browser? Can you sign in to your email successfully through a web browser? If personal Outlook account try https://outlook.live.com/mail
  4. Are emails stuck in the Outbox on the laptop?

A password change can sometimes cause Outlook or other mail apps to stop syncing until the new credentials are entered. "I can't send or receive messages in Outlook" https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/i-can-t-send-or-receive-messages-in-outlook-97748418-bbd5-4743-a05b-581f22a466dd

If you're using Outlook on Windows, check the bottom-right corner of the Outlook window and let me know if it shows "Working Offline", "Disconnected", or "Trying to connect". Follow these steps on the laptop to restore sending and receiving mail:

  1. Confirm internet connectivity
    • Open a browser (Microsoft Edge or Chrome).
    • Browse to http://www.microsoft.com or http://www.bing.com.
    • If neither site loads, fix the network first using the guidance in Fix network connection issues in Windows.
  2. Update the email password in the mail app/Outlook
    • Because the password was changed, the laptop app is likely still using the old one.
    • In new Outlook: select the icon next to the email account name, choose Continue when prompted to sign in, and enter the new password.
    • In classic Outlook: update the account password in the account settings as described under Have you changed your password recently? in the Outlook article.
  3. Check for “account settings are out of date” or similar errors
    • In the Windows Mail/Calendar app, if a banner says Your account settings are out of date, select Fix account, enter the new password, and select Done.
    • If a certificate/security error appears, open Manage Accounts → select the account → Change mailbox sync settings → Advanced mailbox settings, then verify server names/ports and enable Require SSL for incoming email and Require SSL for outgoing email, then Done → Save.
  4. Force a manual sync (if Outlook is used)
    • In Outlook for Windows, go to the View tab and select the Sync button to manually check for new mail and send pending messages.
    • Watch the status bar for sync progress or errors.
  5. Check for antivirus or add‑in interference (classic Outlook)
    • If using classic Outlook and mail still will not send/receive:
      • Temporarily check with the antivirus vendor’s help or settings to see if email scanning is blocking mail.
      • Start Outlook in safe mode to rule out add‑ins: press the Windows key, type outlook.exe /safe, press Enter, then test sending/receiving.
  6. Repair Outlook or the mail profile (if using classic Outlook)

If none of these steps restore mail flow, use the appropriate Outlook troubleshooter from the Classic Outlook troubleshooters page or contact support from the same article.
