Copilot Cowork memory is currently limited and may not support arbitrary custom instructions such as “refer to me as X in future chats.”
For Microsoft 365 Copilot generally, personalization and memory work as follows:
- Copilot Memory automatically collects key details from previous chats and uses them to personalize future responses. It does not remember every detail, only what it infers as useful.
- Saved memories and custom instructions are managed through Settings > Personalization. Copilot can use these saved memories (for example, preferences) in future chats, including voice chats, but users manage them from the Personalization UI, not directly or reliably via ad‑hoc prompts.
- Retention and application of memories are controlled by the product’s memory system, not by simple one‑off prompts. Saying “refer to me as X in future chats” may not be interpreted as a persistent memory item, so behavior like a consistent nickname isn’t guaranteed.
- Admin and user controls (Enhanced personalization, Saved memories, Chat history) affect whether Copilot can apply memory at all. If these are off, Copilot won’t apply saved or inferred memories, even if they exist.
Given this, the behavior described—Copilot not consistently honoring “refer to me as X in future chats”—is expected with current capabilities. Persistent personalization should be configured and reviewed via the Personalization settings rather than relying on that specific phrasing in chat.
If memory-based personalization appears not to work at all (beyond this nickname scenario), verify:
- Chat history personalization is turned on in Copilot Chat settings.
- Saved memories and custom instructions are enabled and configured under Settings > Personalization.
