Hi,

I have an old retail Windows 7 Home which was used to upgrade a laptop to Windows 10 many years ago. That laptop died completely several years ago, but I want to transfer that license to a new self-build, which the retail version I bought allows you to do. I had assumed I could just install windows 10 on the new PC, re-activate it, and immediately be offered the upgrade to windows 11. However, I understand that is not the case because the Win10 upgrade issues a new digital license whereas the Win7 was a retail box and key card.

Therefore, how on earth does one re-install using the retail license if all one has is the original windows 7 key and no actual code for the newer OS? I can't install Windows 7 on the new PC as the OS is too old and is unlikely to even start. (Besides, new PCs have no DVD drives either)

I have no record of this inactive digital license on my Microsoft account. I don't have it for the other box I bought at the same time either, but it does show that device on my account. (For clarity : I bought 2 retail boxes when they offered them dead cheap in 2009 after the Windows Vista Disaster, and want to use 1 of them for the new build).

The use of a Windows 7 licence to activate Windows 10 was allowed during the free upgrade period, 2015 - 2016. That window has been closed, after Microsoft allowed users to continue outside the free upgrade period to activate Windows 10 using a Windows 7 or 8 licence.

Since 2023 Microsoft have closed the loophole (their words) so neither a Windows 7 or 8 licence can be used. Even though the Windows 10 licence was converted to a digital Windows 10 licence it is still based on the original Windows 7 licence. So the two are linked and one cannot be used without affecting the other.

There was also a phrase used for the free upgrade (for the life of the device) which means it cannot be transferred from the original hardware used during the upgrade.

Your Windows 7 licence is indeed retail but that only applies to Windows 7.

Hi,

In this case, the Windows 7 FPP retail license you used is correct; it's an OEM license tied to the hardware of your previous computer. After upgrading to Windows 10, you wouldn't be able to use the same key to activate it on another PC.

    This is highly suspicious as it is the sort of thing that should be made explicitly clear at the time, and certainly wasn't.

    Contract regulations require terms that fundamentally change the nature of a contract to be made explicitly clear, not buried in a website somewhere. Are you sure thats legal (bear in mind I'm not in the USA, so we don't have a free for all attitude to consumer affairs)
