A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Follow these steps in order, based on the current state “Content Not Yet Available” and the actions already taken:
- Verify whether the content is visible on any other device
- Open the same notebook and page on:
- OneNote for Mac or Windows desktop (if available)
- OneNote for the web (Microsoft365.com)
- Any other signed-in device
- If the content is visible anywhere, immediately move it:
- Create a new page or section.
- Copy/paste or use Move or Copy to move the content to a new location.
- Open the same notebook and page on:
- Check whether other users see the same issue (if the notebook is shared)
- Ask any other person with access to the notebook to open that page.
- If they can see the content, have them move/copy it to a new page/section.
- If they also see “Content Not Yet Available,” proceed to the restore options below.
- If the notebook is stored in OneDrive for Business
- Use OneDrive’s restore capability to roll the library back to a point before the deletion:
- Follow the steps in Restore your OneDrive to restore the OneDrive to a previous state where the page content still existed.
- After the restore, open the notebook again and check whether the page content is back. If it is, move the restored content to a safe location (for example, another section) so it is not lost by later changes.
- Use OneDrive’s restore capability to roll the library back to a point before the deletion:
- If the notebook is stored in SharePoint Online
- Use the SharePoint/OneDrive restore path:
- Follow the same Restore your OneDrive guidance to identify whether the notebook content is in a restorable state.
- If the content cannot be restored via Recycle Bin or Files Restore:
- A SharePoint/OneDrive administrator can contact Microsoft Support to request a restoration of the site/library within the additional 14‑day backup window.
- Use the SharePoint/OneDrive restore path:
- Use OneNote’s own recovery options (if using desktop OneNote)
- Check the Notebook Recycle Bin (for pages/sections deleted within the last 60 days):
- In OneNote desktop, select the History tab.
- Select Notebook Recycle Bin.
- If a copy of the deleted page/section appears, right‑click it and choose Move or Copy to restore it to a normal section.
- Restore from OneNote backups (if the notebook has been backed up):
- In OneNote desktop, select File > Info.
- Select Open Backups.
- Navigate to the notebook and section backup that predates the loss.
- Open the backup section, then right‑click the needed page(s) and use Copy or Move or Copy to place them back into the active notebook.
- Check the Notebook Recycle Bin (for pages/sections deleted within the last 60 days):
- If the notebook is stored locally (desktop OneNote)
- Open automatic backups stored on the computer:
- Open the notebook where the notes were lost.
- Go to File > Info > Open Backups.
- Open the relevant backup section and restore pages/sections using Move or Copy.
- Open automatic backups stored on the computer:
- If none of the above paths restore the content
- For iPad/iOS and Mac scenarios where search, recycle bin, OneDrive/SharePoint restore, and backups do not contain the missing content, recovery is limited.
- As a next step, report the issue with full details (device, app version, storage location, and timeline) in the OneNote forums on Microsoft Answers/Microsoft Community; members of the OneNote product team may be able to investigate further.
