Focus Assist (Do Not Disturb) mode locks itself turned ON permanently, blocking all calendar alerts

Hi all,

I’ve missed three critical calendar alerts today because my system has locked itself into Focus Assist mode. The tiny crescent moon icon is stuck in my taskbar tray, and when I click it to turn it off, the option is completely grayed out. I tried going into full System Notification settings, but the sliders for configuring automated rules are unresponsive.

Hello

The issue is caused by the shell interface failing to synchronize with the Windows Notification Service. To resolve this, restart the Windows Explorer process via Task Manager to refresh the taskbar UI and clear the stuck icon. If the controls remain unresponsive, check for enforced work or school policies at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\PushNotifications that may be overriding your settings. If the problem persists, ensure your system is fully updated, as this is likely a shell bug requiring an official patch.

Hope this answer brought you some useful information. If it did, please consider accepting the answer. Thanks :)

Focus assist (Quiet Hours/Do not disturb) can be locked on by its automatic rules or by policy. To restore calendar alerts, check and adjust these in order:

    1. Verify Focus assist / Quiet Hours settings
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Focus assist (Windows 10) or System > Notifications then Do not disturb (Windows 11).
      2. In Windows 10, make sure Focus assist is set to Off (so you “Get all notifications from your apps and contacts”).
      3. Under Automatic rules, turn off each rule (such as During these times, When I’m duplicating my display, When I’m playing a game, or When I’m using an app in full screen mode). If a rule is forcing Focus assist on, disabling it should release the lock.
    2. Check if Quiet Hours is enforced by Group Policy (Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise) If the Focus assist controls are greyed out, a Group Policy may be enforcing Quiet Hours:
      1. Select Start, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
      2. Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar > Notifications.
      3. Review Set the time Quiet Hours begins each day and Set the time Quiet Hours ends each day. If they are configured, they can keep Focus assist on for long periods.
      4. After changing policy (or having an administrator change it), run:
              gpresult /h C:\temp\output.html

and open the report to confirm any policies with “Quiet Hours” are set as intended.
    3. Confirm Outlook/Calendar notifications are allowed Focus assist being stuck on will block Outlook calendar alerts, so after fixing Focus assist:
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Notifications (or Notifications & actions in Windows 10).
      2. Ensure Get notifications from apps and other senders is On.
      3. Find Outlook in the sender list and confirm its notifications are turned on.
    4. Check Do not disturb / Focus sessions (Windows 11 / new Outlook)
      1. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Focus and select Stop focus session if one is running.
      2. Make sure Do not disturb is turned off under Settings > System > Notifications.

If the controls remain greyed out after these steps, the device may be managed by an organization that enforces Focus assist/Quiet Hours via policy; in that case, an administrator must relax or remove the policy.
