Copilot Desktop App doesn't have Memory option.

I'm using the Copilot Desktop App instead of M365 Copilot, mostly for the more clean UI and the "Hey Copilot" voice call option. But in the settings for my account, the Memory option does not have a toggle to activate it and so Copilot cannot remember relevant things I would like to not need to repeat every time in different chats and prompts.

When I ask the chat about this, it first tries to give me instructions to activate it, and then after I tell it the option is not available, it sometimes gets confused and tries to make me use the iPhone app or the website, and other times just tells me it's probable the feature hasn't rolled out to my account or region yet. I do, however, have Memory options if using the oddly confusing M365 Copilot app.

I'm from Brazil, using a M365 Premium personal plan and my account is set to Brazilian Portuguese. Is it a thing, that Memory has rolled out for me in M365C app but not in the regular Desktop app?

Also, what's the point of the two different apps? I get that M365 is more geared towards creating Office files and work whatnots, but why put different features in each one that don't have anything to do with Office apps?

Hi Iuri, the missing Memory option is due to a fragmented cloud rollout across separate app infrastructures. The standalone Copilot Desktop App and M365 Copilot run on entirely different internal codebases; your personal Microsoft account simply received the server-side update for the M365 version first.

Microsoft maintains two separate apps because they have fundamentally different data-handling mandates. M365 Copilot is an enterprise-oriented tool built to interact safely with workspace documents, while the standalone Desktop App is a consumer assistant built for lifestyle features like "Hey Copilot" voice calls. Because non-Office features like universal cross-chat Memory are developed as separate modules for each platform, they roll out independently, meaning you will have to wait for the consumer codebase update to hit your region.

    Hi Iuri Mitika,

Thanks for sharing the detailed context, I understand how useful the Memory feature can be for reducing repeated prompts. From what you described, this behavior is most likely related to how Copilot features are currently made available across different apps and environments.

Nothing appears to be misconfigured on your side, the difference you’re seeing is most likely due to feature rollout timing across different Copilot apps. These experiences are updated over time, so the option may become available in the desktop app in a future.

While there isn’t a manual way to force-enable the toggle, you can still try these quick checks:

    • Check the Memory setting in Copilot on the web or Microsoft 365 Copilot app (where it’s already available for your account)
    • Ensure your desktop app is fully up to date
    • Sign out and back in to refresh your profile state

I hope this helps clarify what’s happening. Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.
