MS Word on MacOS intermittently cannot save due to low disk space

We are experiencing a frequently recurring MS Word issue with our Apple silicone mac fleet. MacOS will intermittently prompt users that the document cannot be saved due to there being low disk space, whether they select to save on the cloud, or locally. In all documented cases, users have ample remaining storage.

We am not sure how to resolve it. Has anyone else had luck with this?

This behavior matches known Word for Mac issues where environmental or platform factors interrupt the save process and Word incorrectly reports a disk/space problem.

For Apple silicon Macs, the most relevant supported mitigations are:

    1. Update Office for Mac on all devices
A number of save and file-handling issues on Mac are resolved in current builds.
      • Open any Office app (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook).
      • On the Help menu, select Check for Updates.
      • Under How would you like to check for software updates?, select Automatically.
      • Choose the desired update frequency and select Check for Updates. Ensure all users are on the latest Word for Mac build before further troubleshooting.
    2. Address “serious disk error” / save failures caused by the temp-file swap
Word creates a temporary file during save/autosave and then replaces the original file. If something in the environment (disk, file system, or another process) interrupts this, Word can surface errors like:
      • “There is a serious disk error on file …”
      • “Word cannot save or create this file. The disk may be full or write-protected.”
The documented resolution for these save-path issues is to ensure Office is fully updated (as above). If the problem persists after updating, Microsoft recommends contacting support for deeper investigation of the environment (file system, security/AV tools, network storage, etc.), as the interruption is environmental rather than a simple capacity problem.
    3. Check for OneDrive / Files On-Demand interactions (if saving to OneDrive)
On macOS, OneDrive Files On-Demand relies on Apple’s File Provider platform to report disk usage. Files with data in the sync root are treated specially and may not count against used disk space in the way users expect. If Word is saving into a OneDrive-backed location, the File Provider layer can influence how much free space is reported to applications. Key points:
      • Files with data in the sync root generally do not count against used disk space as reported by File Provider.
      • Pinned files on the home drive use APFS clones and can behave differently; they may count against used space and are not evicted.
      • OneDrive also marks some file types as non-evictable, which can affect available space.
If the error appears primarily when saving to OneDrive-backed folders, test saving the same document to a purely local, non-synced folder (e.g., a local folder under the user’s home directory) to see if the behavior reproduces. If it does not, focus on OneDrive/File Provider behavior and ensure OneDrive is current.
    4. If Word crashes or shows related errors, test user profile and OS environment
For persistent Word issues on Mac, Microsoft recommends:
      • Testing with a new macOS user account to rule out profile corruption.
      • Performing a clean startup of macOS to identify interference from background apps.
      • Using Disk Utility → First Aid / Repair Disk Permissions (where applicable) to correct file system/permissions issues that can interfere with saving.
      • As a last resort, removing and reinstalling Office for Mac if application files are corrupted.
These steps help isolate whether the save failures are tied to specific user profiles, system-level interference, or disk/permissions problems.
    5. If the issue persists after updates and basic isolation, escalate to Microsoft support
The “serious disk error” and related save failures are explicitly documented as potentially environmental. If updating Office and validating the local vs OneDrive behavior does not resolve the problem, collect examples (affected users, paths, timestamps, whether the target is local or cloud) and open a support case so Microsoft can review logs and the specific Apple silicon/macOS environment.
