I am unable to see received shares even though i have azure data share contributor

The reason you can see Sent Shares but not Received Shares is most likely a role or invitation issue. The Azure Data Share Contributor role gives you permission to manage and send shares, but viewing Received Shares requires that the share invitation was sent specifically to your email/identity, and that you have the right role on the Data Share account to accept and view it. If the invitation was sent to a different email or if the role is assigned at the wrong scope, the Received Shares tab will appear empty.

Here's how to troubleshoot this step by step:

In the Azure Portal, go to your Azure Data Share resource and click on Received Shares from the left menu. If it appears empty, check if there is a pending invitation by clicking on Pending Invitations — the share may not have been accepted yet.

Confirm with the data sender that they sent the invitation to the correct email address (the one linked to your Azure account). Even a small mismatch will cause the invitation to not show up.

Check that your Azure Data Share Contributor role is assigned at the correct scope — it should be on the specific Data Share account resource, not just at the subscription or resource group level.

For viewing and accepting Received Shares, you also need to have at least Contributor role on the target storage account or dataset where the shared data will land. Make sure that permission is in place too.

If you see a pending invitation, click on it and select Accept and Configure to complete the process — only after accepting will it appear under Received Shares.

If no invitation appears at all, ask the sender to delete and resend the invitation to your correct email, then check the Pending Invitations tab again after a few minutes.

Try logging out and back into the Azure Portal, or use a different browser, to rule out any caching or session issue.

Azure Data Share receiving scenarios are tied not only to the Data Share account but also to the destination resource where the shared data is received.

Received Shares are represented as Share Subscriptions, and Azure Data Share exposes dedicated permissions such as:

• Microsoft.DataShare/accounts/read
• Microsoft.DataShare/accounts/shareSubscriptions/read
• Microsoft.DataShare/listInvitations/read

Azure Data Share also supports the use of custom RBAC roles, allowing organizations to implement a least-privilege access model instead of assigning broad built-in roles.

At this time, there is no documented built-in read-only role specifically for viewing Received Shares, nor is there a published minimum permission set that guarantees visibility of the Received Shares blade without the permissions required for the receive workflow.

If the requirement is to avoid assigning the Storage Account Contributor role, a possible approach would be to evaluate a custom role containing only the required Azure Data Share permissions and validate whether it satisfies the visibility requirement in your environment.
