Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
To install Office on the Surface Go, the device must be signed in with, and then Office must be installed and activated using, the account that owns the Microsoft 365/Office license.
Follow these steps in order:
- Confirm which account owns Office
- On another device or in a browser on the Surface Go, go to the Microsoft account dashboard: https://account.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account (or work/school account) that was used to buy or redeem Microsoft 365/Office.
- Check Services & subscriptions and confirm that a Microsoft 365 or Office product is listed and active. This is the account that must be used on the Surface Go.
- Sign in to Windows with or add that account (if needed)
- If the Surface Go is already using a different account and blocking sign-in with the Office account, add the correct account under Settings > Accounts > Email & accounts or Access work or school and connect it.
- If the sign-in is blocked by an organization policy when using a work or school account, contact the Microsoft 365 admin as required in the documentation.
- Download and install Office on the Surface Go
- On the Surface Go, open a browser and go to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps or https://www.office.com.
- Sign in with the same account confirmed in step 1 (Microsoft account or work/school account).
- If signed in with a Microsoft account:
- From the Microsoft 365 Apps page, select Install apps, then Install to download the installer.
- If signed in with a work or school account:
- Follow the prompts provided after sign-in; if no install option appears, the organization may control installations and the Microsoft 365 admin must provide or assign the license.
- Run the installer and activate Office
- Open the downloaded installer file and complete the setup.
- After installation, open Word or another Office app.
- When prompted to sign in, use the same account that shows the active Microsoft 365/Office subscription.
- This associates and activates Office on the Surface Go.
If the message indicates that the account is not associated with Office (for example, “The account doesn’t have Office yet” or “The account isn’t associated with this Office product”), verify that the correct account is being used and that the subscription or license is actually assigned to that account. If it is a work or school account and still fails, the Microsoft 365 admin must check license assignment.
