I saw an email from my relative and opened email but not the Punch Bowl invitation that it included. It invaded my computer anyway and I cannot receive any email. How do I fix this? I can send out but not receive. I have a hotmail.com address

Follow these steps in Outlook.com (Hotmail) to restore receiving mail and clean up any mailbox-side issues:

  1. Check storage and account status
  • If Microsoft cloud storage is full, no email can be received and messages sent to the account are bounced and unrecoverable.
  • Sign in to Outlook.com and check mailbox storage using the storage page linked from the article “Can't send or receive email in Outlook.com.” If storage is full, delete unneeded email (especially with large attachments) and empty Deleted Items.
  • If email still does not arrive, verify the account is not blocked by following the guidance in “unblock your Outlook.com account” from the same article.
  1. Check Focused/Other and filters
  • In Outlook.com, open the Inbox and check both the Focused and Other tabs to ensure messages are not being hidden.
  • Select Filter > Sort > Date to restore normal chronological order so new messages are visible.
  1. Check Junk Email settings and folder
  • Go to Settings → Mail → Junk Email and review any blocked senders or domains that might be preventing messages from arriving.
  • Open the Junk Email folder and look for legitimate messages. For any message that should be in the Inbox, right-click it and choose Mark as not junk to move it back and train filtering.
  1. Check rules and forwarding
  • In Outlook.com, go to Settings → Mail → Rules and look for any rules that move, delete, or divert incoming mail (for example, to RSS feeds or other folders). Delete or disable any suspicious or unwanted rules.
  • Go to Settings → Mail → Forwarding and ensure there is no forwarding set to another address. If forwarding is enabled and not needed, turn it off.
  1. Check connected apps and protocols
  • If Outlook.com is being accessed through a third-party mail app (mobile or desktop), ensure it supports modern authentication and IMAP as required. If IMAP or POP are enabled and causing issues with a connected app, disable IMAP/POP as described in the POP/IMAP settings article and test again.
  1. If only specific senders can’t reach the account
  • If a particular sender’s messages are not arriving and no error is shown in Outlook.com, ask the sender to review “Sender Support in Outlook.com” to check their sending reputation and configuration.
  1. If the problem persists
  • Use the Outlook.com interactive troubleshooter from the “Can't send or receive email in Outlook.com” article.
  • For additional help, sign in to Outlook.com, select Help on the menu bar, describe the issue, and if self-help does not resolve it, scroll to Still need help? and choose to chat with a support agent in the browser.

These steps address the main Outlook.com causes for being able to send but not receive mail, regardless of the specific message that was opened.

    Hi N Daniels

I understand how concerning this is, especially after opening an email and then suddenly being unable to receive messages.

Have you already tried the AI Assist answer under your post? Could you please also confirm:

    • Did you only open the email, or did you also open the Punchbowl invitation/link or attachment?
    • When someone sends you a test email, do they receive any bounce-back or delivery failure message?

Please do these checks in this order:

1, Run a malware scan first (Windows)

if you suspect the account or device may be compromised:

    • Open Windows Security
    • Go to Virus & threat protection > Scan now

    2, Double-check mailbox storage

    • In Outlook on the web, go to Settings > Account > Storage
    • Clear space if needed by deleting or moving emails

    3, Send a test email

Ask someone to send a test email to you and check whether they receive any bounce-back or delivery error.

For more details, you can see: Email is missing from your Outlook.com inbox

Looking forward to your reply so I can assist you further. Thank you for your understanding.
