A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Follow these steps to update the payment method and get Microsoft 365 working again.
- Check for a past-due subscription
- Go to Services & subscriptions at https://account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account used for Microsoft 365.
- Look for any subscription marked past due or attention needed.
- If one is past due, select Pay now and follow the prompts.
- When prompted for payment, either update the existing payment method (new expiry/CVV) or add a new one, then select Next to complete payment.
- Update or fix the payment method on the Microsoft account
- Go to Payment options at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/payments and sign in.
- Find the card that is failing and select View or edit card.
- Update name, billing address, expiration date, and CVV, then select Save.
- Ensure the billing address and name exactly match the bank statement and that the card has sufficient funds.
- If cards/PayPal keep failing
- Some banks require extra security checks (multi-factor authentication) before approving online subscription payments. Check for any SMS/email from the bank and complete their verification.
- If a card is repeatedly declined even after details are correct, contact the bank or card issuer to confirm:
- Online/recurring payments to Microsoft are allowed.
- No fraud block is active on the card.
- For PayPal, ensure the PayPal account has a valid funding source (credit card or confirmed bank account) and that the linked card is not expired and has funds.
- If the subscription was purchased through a third party
- If Microsoft 365 was originally bought via Apple, Google, a retailer, or another third party, the payment method must be changed with that retailer, not in the Microsoft account. See the guidance in Manage your Microsoft 365 subscription purchased through a third party from the context.
- If the admin center or billing pages won’t work
- If using a business account and the Microsoft 365 admin center billing pages fail to load, try:
- A private/incognito browser window.
- Clearing browser cache/cookies and then signing in again.
- When self-service still doesn’t work
- For consumer Microsoft accounts (for home), use the Contact – Microsoft Support path from the context to reach billing support:
- Sign in, choose Microsoft 365/Office.
- Select a billing/payment category.
- Use Chat with a support agent or request a callback.
- For business/organization accounts, an admin can open a billing support ticket from the Microsoft 365 admin center using the Help & support pane.
Once the payment method is successfully updated and any past-due balance is paid, access to Microsoft 365 apps (including OneNote) should be restored.
