A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Use the following sequence to fix OneDrive and saving issues on macOS and to clean up multiple OneDrive instances.
- Confirm OneDrive is running and visible
- On the Mac menu bar, look for the OneDrive cloud icon.
- If it is not there, use Spotlight, type “OneDrive”, and open it.
- If the icon still does not appear, OneDrive might not be running correctly; continue with the reset steps below.
- Reset the OneDrive app (Mac) When there are multiple OneDrive instances or the icon is missing, resetting OneDrive can re-establish a clean sync:
- Open Finder and go to the Applications folder.
- Find OneDrive.
- Right-click OneDrive and select Show Package Contents.
- Browse to Contents > Resources.
- Double-click ResetOneDriveApp.command (or ResetOneDriveAppStandalone.command if using the standalone app).
- After the reset completes, start OneDrive again from Applications or via Spotlight and complete the setup.
This reset disconnects existing sync connections but does not delete files; OneDrive will perform a full resync.
- Remove duplicate/old sign-in credentials If more than one OneDrive account or instance is present, clearing cached credentials helps ensure only the correct account is used:
- Open Keychain Access (via Spotlight search for “keychain” or from the Utilities folder).
- In the search box, type OneDrive.
- Delete OneDrive Cached Credential.
- Alternatively, choose Window > Keychain Access, then File > Delete Keychain [OneDrive/Office/MS] and click Delete References.
- Close Keychain Access.
- Re-link OneDrive account
- Use Spotlight to search for OneDrive and open it.
- Sign in with the desired account.
- When prompted that a OneDrive folder already exists, select Use this folder (or Choose new folder if a different location is preferred).
- Allow OneDrive to resync files. Placeholders may be used to save disk space.
- Check new OneDrive path and open files from there On newer macOS versions, OneDrive’s path may have moved:
- OneDrive is now under Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive.
- An alias is left in the old location under the user folder.
To access and save files correctly:
- Open Finder.
- Browse to Library > Cloud Storage > OneDrive or use the OneDrive alias.
- Open Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and use File > Save As to save into this new OneDrive folder.
- Fix AutoSave and local saving from Office apps Because the OneDrive path changed, AutoSave and saving may fail until the new location is used:
- In Word/Excel/PowerPoint, open a document.
- Select File > Save As.
- Navigate to the new OneDrive folder under Cloud Storage and save there.
- After doing this once per document, AutoSave should work again for that file.
- Ensure OneDrive and macOS are up to date
- If OneDrive was installed from the Mac App Store and fails to launch, uninstall it and download the latest OneDrive app from Microsoft’s site or confirm the latest version from the Mac App Store.
- Keeping both macOS and OneDrive updated helps avoid sync and saving issues.
If sync icons are stuck or files appear not to sync, temporarily pause syncing, move a file out of the OneDrive folder, resume syncing, then move the file back to clear stuck sync states.
