Use Device Manager and the built-in camera troubleshooting steps to stabilize the cameras and drivers.

    1. Check if the camera is being disabled or hidden
      1. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open it.
      2. Look under Cameras, Imaging devices, or Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. If the camera is missing, select Action > Scan for hardware changes and wait for Windows to detect and reinstall it.
      4. If the camera appears but shows as disabled, right‑click it and select Enable device.
    2. Roll back a problematic driver (if the issue started after an update)
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the camera and select Properties.
      2. Go to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver, then choose Yes.
      3. Restart the device and test the camera again.
      4. If Roll Back Driver is not available, skip to the uninstall/reinstall step.
    3. Uninstall and let Windows reinstall the driver
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the camera and select Properties.
      2. On the Driver tab, select Uninstall Device.
      3. Check Attempt to remove the driver for this device (or Delete the driver software for this device) if available, then select OK.
      4. In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
      5. Wait for Windows to reinstall the driver, then restart the PC and test the camera.
    4. Check for incompatible or very old camera hardware
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the camera and select Properties.
      2. On the Driver tab, select Driver Details.
      3. If a file name including stream.sys appears, the camera was designed before Windows 7 and is not compatible with current Windows versions; replacing the camera is required.
    5. Switch to the in‑box UVC driver (for external USB cameras)
      1. In Device Manager, find the USB webcam under Cameras or Imaging devices.
      2. Right‑click it and select Update driver.
      3. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
      4. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      5. Choose USB Video Device, then select Next.
      6. Close the dialog and confirm the camera now appears under Cameras.
      7. Note: the in‑box UVC driver may not support all advanced features (for example, Windows Hello on some devices).
    6. Run the Windows camera troubleshooter (Windows 10)
      1. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
      2. Under Find and fix other problems, select Camera > Run the troubleshooter.
      3. Apply any fixes it suggests and restart.
    7. Verify Windows and driver updates
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      2. If no camera update appears, go to Advanced options > Optional updates and install any camera driver updates listed.
      3. Restart and test.

If the driver continues to auto‑disable or only one of two cameras appears, it typically indicates a faulty or incompatible camera/driver. After these steps, check the device manufacturer’s support page for a specific camera driver or firmware update for the Insider build in use.

    Hi KALPESHKUMAR JADHAV,

I’m sorry to hear that your camera is not working, as drivers are automatically disabling/hiding itself. To make sure we are on the same page, it’d be helpful if you can share the brand and model of your PC (and the cameras if they’re external).

Since you are in the Insider program, we can’t rule out a possible build regression. The AI answer also covered some standard troubleshooting steps, so here are some additional things worth checking:

1 - If Windows is powering off the camera device:

    • Open Device Manager > expand Cameras > right-click your device
    • Open Properties > check the tabs for Power Management option
    • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    • If the cameras are external > also check under USB controllers
      • USB Root Hub
      • Generic USB Hub
      • Other USB sections
    • Turn off the power saving option > Restart the PC.

2 - Reinstallation repair (keeping files and apps)

Disclaimer: Both Windows reinstallation and in-place upgrade will refresh your Windows files and operating system without removing files or applications. That being said, we always recommend that if you have important data, you should back it up first before making large system changes.

3 - If the issue exists only on the Insider build

    • Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program
    • If the issue started after a recent update, consider rolling back (if still available)
    • Try switching to a more stable channel such as Beta or Release Preview (or stable, official build).

If the camera still disappears periodically, it’d be helpful if you can share more details on the device. We can look into to see if there’s any specific issue with it!
